Planning a trek this August but confused between Hampta Pass and Bhrigu Lake? Youâre not alone. These two treks in Himachal Pradesh are among the most popular monsoon options in India. Both offer stunning landscapes, green meadows, and a close connection to nature. But they are also very different in terms of experience, difficulty, and what they offer during the monsoon season.
In this article, we break down both treks to help you decide which one is right for your adventure this August.
Bhrigu Lake Trek
Hampta Pass offers a complete change of scenery in just a few days. The trek starts in lush green valleys of Kullu and crosses over to the barren and dramatic landscapes of Lahaul. In between, you pass through pine forests, alpine meadows, wildflower fields, and snowy stretches.
One of the highlights is the Chandratal Lake, a beautiful crescent-shaped lake that you can visit at the end of the trek if the weather allows. During August, the valley is at its greenest, with clouds playing hide and seek over the mountains.
The main attraction here is the Bhrigu Lake itself, a high-altitude glacial lake that sits peacefully above the clouds. The lake changes color depending on the season and weather, and reaching it feels rewarding despite the relatively short trek.
What makes this trek special is the meadows. Starting just 10 minutes into the trek, you walk through wide, open grasslands that are green, soft, and full of wildflowers in August. On clear days, you get views of peaks like Hanuman Tibba and Deo Tibba.
August is a monsoon month, but the rain mostly affects the Kullu side. Once you cross over to the Lahaul side, itâs much drier. However, you do need to be ready for wet trails, occasional landslides on the drive to the base camp, and possible changes in itinerary.
Clouds and mist add a mysterious feel to the landscape, but they can also block the views. Still, this time of year makes the greenery more alive than ever.
Since the trek stays closer to Manali and doesnât cross into the Lahaul region, it gets more rain than Hampta Pass during August. The trails can be slippery, and weather may be unpredictable.
However, the monsoon also brings out the beauty of the meadows, making them look like something out of a fairy tale. If youâre okay with a bit of drizzle and some cloud cover, youâll still enjoy the beauty of this trek.
Hampta Pass is a moderate trek. It involves long walking days, stream crossings, and a steep climb to the pass. Youâll also camp at high altitude, so acclimatization is important. This trek is better suited for people who are reasonably fit or have done at least one Himalayan trek before.
This trek is easy to moderate and is great for beginners. The trail has some steep sections, but since the duration is short and the camps are not too far apart, itâs manageable even if this is your first high-altitude trek.
If youâre short on time or want a quick escape into nature, Bhrigu Lake is a solid choice.
Because itâs a longer trek with a remote route and vehicle support needed for pickup and drop, Hampta Pass is more expensive than Bhrigu Lake. Trekking companies usually charge around INR 9,000 to 12,000, depending on the inclusions.
Also, if you add the Chandratal Lake visit, that might add to your cost and time.
This trek is shorter and starts close to Manali. It doesnât need complex logistics, so itâs cheaper overall. Most packages are priced between INR 5,000 to 7,000. You can also do it as a DIY trek with local guides if you're comfortable planning your own gear and food.
Both treks involve camping, but the experience is different.
Youâll be camping at scenic locations like Chikka, Balu ka Ghera, and Shea Goru. These sites offer a raw Himalayan camping experience with rivers, mountains, and open skies all around.
Since the trek is longer, youâll get more time to enjoy camp life.
You usually camp at Gulaba or Rola Kholi, depending on the route taken. The campsites are set in wide meadows, and while beautiful, the camping experience is simpler and more basic.
Since the trek is short, youâll spend less time in camp compared to Hampta Pass.
The base camp is Jobra, which is a short drive from Manali. Most treks start from Manali, and you need to be in town at least one day in advance. The drive to the starting point is rough, and weather can sometimes delay travel.
The starting point is Gulaba, also near Manali. Itâs easier and quicker to reach, and since the trek is shorter, you can even fit it into a long weekend if you're short on time.
Both Hampta Pass and Bhrigu Lake are fantastic choices for an August trek. Monsoon transforms the hills into a green paradise, and despite the occasional rain, the experience can be magical.
If you want a more challenging and longer adventure, go for Hampta Pass. If youâre after a quick nature getaway with stunning meadows, Bhrigu Lake wonât disappoint.
Whichever you choose, just be prepared with the right rain gear, good shoes, and an open heart for surprises. After all, the mountains have a way of giving you exactly what you didnât know you were looking for.
