Travel guide to Gokarna

Gokarna is a small town in Karnataka state, 5 hours from Goa. For Hindus, the town is considered sacred because of the many temples dedicated to Lord Shiva in the area. Mahabaleshwar and Ganpati temples are the two most important temples in the city. Gokarna, a dapper version of Goa, is a real boon for travellers.

Beaches like Om Beach, Kudle, and Half Moon are all you need after a day in the city's hustle and bustle. Indulge in one of their luxurious Ayurvedic massages or sign up for a yoga class; every aspect of your stay here will be unforgettable. Near the beach, there are numerous shacks that serve delicious food from around the world, as well as an amiable atmosphere.

Gokarna is a great place to visit, but don't forget to take advantage of the beautiful sunsets and sunrises it has to offer.

Places to visit in Gokarna

The Temple of Sri Mahabaleshwara Swamy

During the 4th century, a Dravidian architectural style was used to build the temple, which was made of granite. The 'Atma Linga', which is worshipped by hordes of pilgrims, is housed in the temple's sanctum sanctorum. "Dakshin Kashi" is the name given to the Mahabaleshwara temple (i.e., Kashi of the South).

In fact, it's just a short walk from the main beach in Gokarna itself. At Gokarna, the Hindu festival of Shivratri is marked by a chariot procession, or Rath Yatra.

Temple of Maha Ganapathy

There is a temple here dedicated to Lord Ganesha, who was instrumental in saving and reinstalling Gokarna's "Atma linga." The sanctum sanctorum of the Maha Ganapathi temple features a 5-foot-tall granite idol of Lord Ganesha. You can still see Ravana's blow to the idol's head (in the form of a hole).

The Mahabaleshwara temple is just a few doors down from this temple. In the Mahabaleshwara temple, it is customary to pray to Lord Ganesha in front of the "Atma linga".

Kotiteertha

The holy immersion of idols takes place in this man-made pond-like body of water. Kotiteertha means 'Thousand Springs' in the local language. Some devotees bathe in Kotiteertha before visiting the temples.

Beaches to visit in Gokarna

The main beach of Gokarna

In Gokarna, this is probably the longest beach. It is more popular with pilgrims than tourists because it is located close to the temples. Learn to surf at Gokarna's main beach, where the waves are small and gentle. You can easily get to this west-facing beach by car or by renting a bicycle or scooter.

Kudle Beach

Kudle beach attracts tourists from around the world. There is a lot of room to sit, relax, practise yoga, or play volleyball on the beach. Shack restaurants and huts for lodging line the beach. Kudle beach is surrounded by coconut and palm trees on the hills, and the sunsets are spectacular from the beach's west-facing position.

Om Beach

From the town of Gokarna, the drive to Om beach is through the hills and is quite beautiful. Gokarna's most popular beach has been dubbed "OM Beach" because of its natural shape. In terms of cleanliness, Om Beach is excellent. However, the sunset can still be seen from the middle of the beach, which is south-facing.

When the weather is hot, the beach is lined with trees that provide much-needed shade. It also has a number of brightly coloured fishing boats harboured on its shore. Many of the popular upscale cafes along Om Beach serve locally caught seafood in addition to other delicious meals.
