Lord Kubera is the deity of Wealth and the Guardian of Treasures. He has great fortune and takes care of all riches on earth. People who seek prosperity and abundance worship Kubera. But apart from providing material wealth, Kubera is also a guardian who protects oneâs wealth from loss and depletion.
Letâs discover more about Kubera and why it is important to gain his blessings.
All about Lord Kubera
Kubera is often portrayed as a benevolent god with a pot-belly. He wears jewelry, and holds a money pot or treasure bag. He is the king of Yakshas, who are nature spirits. They are linked to wealth and treasures within the earth.
As per ancient scriptures, Kubera was once a mortal who did rigorous penance to gain his powers. Lord Brahma appointed him as the custodian of wealth and the guardian of the north direction. Due to this, he became a highly revered deity associated with wealth and success.
As the divine treasurer, he has great significance in Hindu mythology. Worshipping Kubera ensures that one can gain wealth and retain it.
The Mahabharata says that Kubera was the son of Prajapati Pulastya and his wife Idavida (daughter of Sage Bharadwaja). He was also Sage Vishrava's brother. Some accounts say that Kubera was born from a cow.

However, Kubera was still seen as an Asura, and people offered him prayers at the end of a sacrificial ritual. Only the Grihyasutras of Shankhayana and Hiranyakesin referred to him as a God. But it was prescribed that he should be given offerings of meat, sesame seeds, and flowers after the sacrificial rituals were complete. The Gautama Dharmashastra and Apastamba refer to him as a mere mortal, not a deity.
It was from the period of the epics (Ramayana and Mahabharata) and Puranas that Kubera attained Godhead and became the Lord of Riches, a Dik-pala and a Lokapala. The Ramayana says that he got this status due to Brahma, the Creator of the World and the father of Pulastya, in recognition of his penance and austerities. Brahma also gave him all the riches of the world and equality with the Gods. He also gifted him the Pushpaka Vimana (a flying chariot). On gaining all these, Kubera returned to Lanka and began to rule it.
As per the Mahabharata, Brahma bestowed on him not only Godhead and the lordship of wealth, the status of Lokapala, and Pushpaka Vimana, but also eternal friendship with Lord Shiva, the lordship of Nairrata demons and a son, Nalakubera.
Kubera is the guardian deity of travelers. He is the Giver of Wealth to his devotees. He is also associated with fertility. Kuberaâs half-brothers were Ravana, Kumbhakarna, Vibhishana and Soorpanakha. In the Mahabharata, Vishrava is the brother of Kubera which makes him Ravanaâs uncle.
Ravana deposed Kubera and took over Lanka. After this, Kubera resided on the Gandhamadana Mountain near Mt. Kailasa. Kubera owned a grove called Chaitrartha. Here, the leaves were made of jewels, while the fruits were apsaras from the heavens. There was also a beautiful lake called Nalini. The Mahabharata narrates the magnificence of Kubera's court. The Gandharvas and the Apsarass used to entertain him, and Lord Shiva, his close friend, often visited him along with Goddess Parvati. Other divine and semi-divine beings, like the Vidyadhara, Kimpurushas, Rakshasas, Pishachas, etc., frequented his court. Like all Lokapalas, Kubera is always accompanied by 7 seers of the North.
On one occasion, Kuberaâs magnificent city, called Alaka, was supposedly plundered by Ravana. The Pandava prince, Bhima, also attacked it once. Kubera's Nairrata army defeated King Muchukunda, who defeated them later. Shukracharya, the Guru of the Asuras, also attacked Kubera, defeated him, and appropriated his wealth. Kubera was a great host and often entertained many dignitaries. Once, he invited the great Sage Ashtavakra to his palace and gained his grace.
Lord Balaji's Loan Repayment to Kubera
Lord Balaji (a form of Maha Vishnu), supposedly owes a permanent outstanding loan to Kubera, which he is still repaying. His devotees are helping him repay the loan in the form of donations and dakshinas they make to the Tirupati temple. Hence, the temple is the wealthiest in India.
