Bangalore to Coorg – A Refreshing Road Trip into the Hills

Living in Bangalore, I often crave a break from the city’s traffic and noise. Coorg, just 5-6 hours away, is a dream destination with its rolling green hills, coffee plantations, waterfalls, and cool weather. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or great food, Coorg has it all.

Nicknamed the Scotland of India, this hill station is a perfect getaway for anyone looking to unwind in nature. It offers a blend of scenic landscapes, rich culture, and unique experiences, making it one of my favorite short trips from Bangalore.

Best Route and Travel Tips

The distance from Bangalore to Coorg trip is about 250 km, and the drive is smooth if you take the right route.

Best Route:

The most scenic and recommended route is:

Bangalore → Ramanagara → Mysore → Kushalnagar → Madikeri (Coorg)

This route has well-maintained highways, making it an enjoyable drive.

Travel Tips for a Smooth Journey:

  • Start Early – Leave by 5-6 AM to avoid Bangalore’s morning traffic.
  • Take Breaks – Stop at Mysore or Kushalnagar for sightseeing or food.
  • Fuel Up Before the Ghats – Fewer petrol pumps in the hills, so refuel before reaching Coorg.
  • Weather Check – Monsoons make the drive stunning but roads slippery—drive carefully!

Must-Visit Places in Coorg

Coorg is full of natural beauty and cultural attractions. Here are some must-visit places:

Raja’s Seat – Stunning Sunrise and Sunset Views

This famous viewpoint offers breathtaking views of the hills and valleys. It’s best visited early in the morning or during sunset when the sky turns golden and mist rolls over the hills.

Abbey Falls – Nature’s Hidden Gem

A short trek through dense coffee plantations leads to the beautiful Abbey Falls. The sound of water gushing down into the rocky pool below is mesmerizing, making it a perfect place for nature lovers and photographers.

Namdroling Monastery – A Peaceful Tibetan Retreat

Located in Kushalnagar, this monastery is home to golden Buddha statues and beautiful Tibetan architecture. The peaceful atmosphere, combined with the sound of Buddhist chants, makes it a great place to relax and experience Tibetan culture.

If you love adventure, don’t miss the Mandalpatti Jeep Safari. This off-road experience takes you through rugged trails leading to a viewpoint above the clouds. The view from the top is nothing short of magical!

Barapole River Rafting – A Thrill-Seeker’s Delight

For adventure lovers, river rafting in Barapole is a must-try. The rapids are exciting, and the experience of navigating through the gushing river surrounded by forests is unforgettable.

Coffee, Cuisine, and Local Delights

Coorg is not just about stunning landscapes—it’s also a foodie’s paradise. The region’s famous Kodava cuisine and coffee plantations make the trip even more special.

Coffee Lover’s Paradise

Coorg is one of India’s largest coffee producers, so trying freshly brewed Coorg coffee is a must. Many coffee estates offer tours and tastings, where you can learn about the coffee-making process and enjoy a cup straight from the source.

Must-Try Local Dishes

  • Pandi Curry – A traditional Kodava-style pork curry made with Coorg spices.
  • Kadumbuttu – Soft rice dumplings served with spicy curry.
  • Nool Puttu – A rice noodle dish, often eaten with coconut-based gravies.

Returning to Bangalore – A Trip to Remember

After two days of exploring Coorg, it was time to head back to Bangalore. But before leaving, I made sure to buy some fresh coffee, homemade chocolates, and local spices as souvenirs.

The return journey felt peaceful, with memories of misty hills, breathtaking waterfalls, and delicious food fresh in my mind. A trip to Coorg is more than just a vacation—it’s a refreshing escape that stays with you forever.
