1. Upgrade Your Moisturizer (The Winter Coat for Your Skin)

The lightweight lotion that worked for you in the summer is likely not enough for winter. Think of your summer moisturizer as a light jacket and your winter moisturizer as a heavy, protective coat.

  • Switch to a Thicker Formula: Look for creams and ointments instead of just lotions. These have a higher oil content and create a more effective barrier against moisture loss.

  • Essential Ingredients to Look For:
  • Ceramides: These are lipids (fats) that naturally occur in your skin and help repair the skin barrier. They are like the "glue" that holds your skin cells together.


  • Hyaluronic Acid: A humectant that acts like a sponge, drawing moisture into the skin. Apply a serum with this ingredient to damp skin before your moisturizer to lock in extra hydration.

  • Shea Butter/Glycerin: Excellent emollients and occlusives that create a rich seal to prevent water from evaporating.

2. Ditch the Hot Showers

A long, steamy shower feels incredible when it's freezing outside, but it's one of the biggest culprits of winter dry skin. Hot water strips your skin of its natural oils (sebum) much faster than warm water.



  • Keep it Lukewarm and Short: Use lukewarm water instead of hot. Limit your shower or bath to 5 to 10 minutes.


  • Moisturize Immediately: This is critical. Within three minutes of stepping out (while your skin is still slightly damp), apply your body cream or oil. This traps the water from the shower into your skin.

3. Be Gentle with Cleansing and Exfoliation

Harsh cleansers and over-exfoliating can damage your skin barrier, making it even more vulnerable to the cold.


  • Gentle Cleansing: Swap foaming or gel cleansers for cream, oil, or milk cleansers that clean without leaving your skin feeling tight or "squeaky clean."

  • Pull Back on Exfoliation: Reduce your physical scrubbing and chemical exfoliation (AHAs/BHAs) to once or twice a week at most. Over-exfoliating removes the protective layer you desperately need in winter.

4. Don't Forget the Extremities (Hands and Lips)

Your hands and lips are constantly exposed and suffer the most from wind and frequent washing.


  • Protect Your Hands: Apply a thick hand cream after every time you wash your hands. Wear gloves when you go outside to protect against harsh winds.


  • Use an Occlusive Lip Balm: Look for lip balms or ointments that contain ingredients like petrolatum, beeswax, or shea butter to create a protective barrier that seals in moisture. Reapply throughout the day and before bed.

5. Address the Indoor Air (Use a Humidifier)

Central heating keeps you warm, but it drastically reduces the moisture in the air inside your home, essentially creating an arid desert environment that constantly sucks water from your skin.



  • Run a Humidifier: Place a humidifier in the room where you spend the most time, especially your bedroom while you sleep. Aim for an indoor humidity level between 40% and 60% to help your skin stay hydrated passively.
