3 Days in Coorg: A Blissful Getaway Amid Coffee Hills and Waterfalls

If you’re dreaming of a short yet refreshing escape from city life, Coorg, the charming hill station in Karnataka, should be at the top of your list. Known as the Scotland of India, Coorg perfectly blends misty hills, sprawling coffee plantations, rich culture, and soothing waterfalls. I recently explored Coorg on a 3-day Coorg tour trip, and it was the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and authentic experiences. Here’s my detailed account, along with tips and insights for anyone planning a similar trip.

Day 1: Arrival and Exploring Madikeri

I began my journey early morning from Bangalore, a drive of about 6 hours through winding roads and lush green landscapes. If you prefer flying, the nearest airport is Mangalore (140 km from Coorg). Mysore and Bangalore are also convenient gateways.

Upon arrival in Madikeri, the heart of Coorg, I checked into a quaint homestay surrounded by coffee estates. The aroma of freshly roasted coffee was the perfect welcome. After a quick lunch, I headed to Raja’s Seat, a famous viewpoint offering panoramic views of mist-covered hills. Watching the sun set over the valleys was magical and a perfect way to start the trip.

Later, I explored Madikeri Fort and the Omkareshwara Temple, which offered glimpses of Coorg’s history and spiritual side. For dinner, I indulged in local Kodava cuisine — pandi curry (pork curry) and akki rotti (rice flatbread), paired with a steaming cup of filter coffee.

Day 2: Waterfalls, Coffee Plantations & Monasteries

The second day was packed with some of Coorg’s most iconic attractions. After breakfast, I visited Abbey Falls, located just 8 km from Madikeri. The roar of the waterfall amidst lush coffee plantations created an unforgettable scene.

Next, I went to Dubare Elephant Camp, where you can watch elephants bathe in the river and even feed them. It’s an experience both fun and heartwarming, especially for families and animal lovers.

In the afternoon, I explored a coffee plantation. Walking through the aromatic coffee fields, learning about the coffee-making process, and tasting fresh coffee straight from the estate was an eye-opening experience. Coorg’s plantations are famous worldwide, and taking home some freshly roasted beans is a must.

The final stop of the day was Bylakuppe Tibetan Settlement, home to the stunning Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple). The temple’s golden facade, intricate murals, and chanting monks create a serene and spiritual atmosphere — a beautiful contrast to the day’s adventures.

Day 3: Talacauvery, Nature Walks & Farewell

I started the last day early with a nature walk through the homestay’s coffee and spice plantations. The morning mist, chirping birds, and lush greenery made it a rejuvenating start to the day.

Later, I visited Talacauvery, the sacred origin of the River Kaveri, located about 45 km from Madikeri. The drive was scenic, with winding roads, rolling hills, and thick forests. The temple at Talacauvery offers a peaceful spot for reflection, and nearby Brahmagiri Hill offers panoramic views for those who enjoy short treks.

Before heading back, I visited Bhagamandala Temple, another sacred site where three rivers converge. It was a serene way to end my Coorg experience — soaking in the natural beauty, spirituality, and calm that this region offers.

Best Time to Visit Coorg

Coorg is beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit is between October and March, when the weather is cool and pleasant. The monsoon season (June–September) transforms Coorg into a lush, green paradise with flowing waterfalls, though roads can be slippery.

How to Reach Coorg

  • By Air: Mangalore (140 km) is the closest airport; Mysore (120 km) and Bangalore (280 km) are alternative options.
  • By Train: Nearest stations are Mysore and Hassan; taxis or buses can take you from there.
  • By Road: Well-connected highways make self-driving or hiring a cab convenient.

Accommodation & Food Tips

  • Stay: Homestays are the best way to experience local culture, with prices from ₹1500–₹4000 per night. Luxury resorts like Taj Madikeri or Evolve Back offer premium stays amidst stunning scenery.
  • Food: Don’t miss Kodava specialties like Bamboo Shoot Curry, Noolputtu, Kadambuttu, and of course, fresh Coorg coffee. Madikeri has plenty of cafés and restaurants serving authentic local food.
  • Budget: A 3-day Coorg trip generally costs ₹12,000–₹18,000 per person, covering accommodation, food, and travel.

Local Tips for a Smooth Trip

  • Transportation: Renting a cab or scooter is the easiest way to explore. Public transport is limited.
  • Packing: Carry light jackets, comfortable shoes, and rain gear if traveling during monsoon.
  • Safety: Roads can be foggy and slippery in the mornings and during rains — drive cautiously.
  • Shopping: Coorg honey, coffee, homemade chocolates, and spices make excellent souvenirs.

Why Coorg is the Ultimate 3-Day Escape

What makes Coorg unforgettable is its balance of nature, culture, and serenity. In just three days, you can explore coffee plantations, waterfalls, historical sites, and sacred temples, all while feeling the refreshing mountain air and listening to the gentle rustle of leaves.

Coorg is more than just a destination; it’s an experience — a chance to slow down, reconnect with nature, and savor life one cup of coffee at a time. Whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, or with family, a 3-day escape to Coorg promises memories that linger long after you leave.

So pack your bags, leave your worries behind, and let Coorg’s misty hills, flowing rivers, and aromatic coffee estates work their magic.
