4 Best Neighbourhoods to Live in Leicester

Leicester is a city that often surprises people. Located in the heart of the East Midlands, it's a place where 2,000 years of history meet a vibrant, modern multiculturalism. Whether you're a digital nomad, a student, or a professional looking to relocate, choosing the right area is the first step to falling in love with this city.

After exploring its streets from the historic Roman ruins to the bustling modern quarters, I decided to put together my living experience in this guide.

1. Clarendon Park

If you enjoy a "village feel" within a city, Clarendon Park is undoubtedly the top choice. Walking down Queens Road, you'll find independent boutiques, vegan-friendly cafes, and local pubs where everyone knows your name. This area offers lots of student accommodation in Leicester, ideal for young professionals and postgraduates.

2. Leicester City Centre

The City Centre offers sleek apartment living. If you are travelling in Leicester for just a few days, this area will not disappoint you. Everything is convenient. With no need to drive cars, you can walk to enjoy the vibrant urban life, from dining, shopping, to visiting attractions. Highcross Shopping Centre and the Cultural Quarter, home to the Curve Theatre, are all within walking distance. Notably, De Montfort University is also located in the City Centre.

3. Knighton & Oadby

Moving further south, Knighton and Oadby offer a much quieter pace of life. These areas are famous for their stunning Victorian houses and proximity to the University of Leicester Botanic Garden. It's the greenest part of the city, perfect for long Sunday walks. If you are moving here with families to settle down, these areas are highly recommended for their peaceful atmosphere and reputable schools.

4. The West End

Narborough Road in the West End is legendary for being the most diverse street in the UK. Living here means having the world at your doorstep, from authentic Turkish kebabs to Polish bakeries and Indian spices. It offers budget-friendly housing for foodies and travellers.

Before moving to Leicester, it is always wise to compare different neighbourhoods and understand the average costs before signing any contracts.

  • West End: £650 - £900 (Shared rooms); £700 - £870 (1-bed flats)
  • City Centre: £700 - £1,100 (Modern apartments)
  • Clarendon Park: £780 - £900 (Trendy studios/flats)

My personal favourite is Clarendon Park for its cafes and trendy vibe, but the West End is unbeatable for a Friday night dinner. Are you planning a trip to Leicester soon? Let me know in the comments which area appeals to you most!
