This peaceful and quaint little town is located within Himachal Pradesh-known for its serenity, ancient monasteries, and landscapes. Sited at about 3,080 meters above sea level or at 10,105 feet, the district headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti, Keylong, is notable for its distance and ruggedness. Unlike the mainstream tourist spots of Himachal, an ideal destination like Keylong provides respite from touristy spots, hence it is a perfect place for nature lovers and trekking enthusiasts who want to witness the stillness of the Himalayas.
Keylong is situated on the Manali-Leh Highway, about 120 kilometers from Manali.
The town lies on the banks of the Bhaga River, surrounded by majestic snow-capped peaks and lush green valleys. During winter, Keylong is often cut off from the rest of Himachal Pradesh due to heavy snowfall, but it becomes accessible again from late May to early October when the roads reopen.
The two main passes that connect Manali with Keylong are the Rohtang Pass and Atal Tunnel. Atal Tunnel, opened in 2020, has significantly improved access to the Lahaul Valley and not just reduced travel time but also made it accessible throughout the year for more tourists. Summer months also allow one to access Keylong from Leh, this being a popular stopover on the very scenic Manali-Leh route.
The climate in Keylong is cool and dry, with temperatures often going below freezing in winters. June to September is the ideal time to visit Keylong as they have less extreme climates and greenery in and around the places. Summer brings Keylong temperatures in the range of 10°C and 25°C, which makes it perfect for activities outside, and the clear blue skies during this time reflect a breathtaking sight of frozen peaks that makes Keylong a photographer's paradise.
From October onwards, temperatures start dropping and make Keylong Himachal a winter wonderland. Heavy snowfall closes roads sometimes, making it difficult for tourist visits to this place. For those who can dare adventure in winter, the brilliance of even landscapes makes for a more different experience, although it is much more tiring as one has to be more cautious and prepared.
