Andharban Trek: Exploring the “Dark Forest” of the Western Ghats

If you love trekking and the monsoon magic of Maharashtra, the Andharban Jungle Trek is a must-visit. Nestled near Tamhini Ghat, this trail is named Andharban, meaning dark forest, because of the dense greenery that keeps the sunlight at bay. Walking through the misty woods, cascading waterfalls, and bamboo groves feels like stepping into a completely different world.

I did this trek during the monsoon, and honestly, it was one of the most refreshing experiences. The forest was alive — water droplets on leaves, birds chirping, and the soothing sound of streams. Every few steps, I was treated to views of the Kundalika Valley, waterfalls, and sometimes glimpses of the Mulshi backwaters far below.

The Trek Experience

The Andharban Trek is about 13–14 km, starting from Pimpri village and ending near Bhira Dam. It’s a mostly descending trail, which makes it unique compared to the usual uphill treks. While it isn’t extremely difficult, slippery paths and streams during monsoon can be challenging. I’d recommend good trekking shoes, a rain jacket, and a trekking pole for stability.

What makes the trek truly magical is the variety — from thick forest patches to open valleys and waterfalls. Every corner feels like a surprise, and if you love photography, you’ll be in paradise.

Best Time to Visit

The trek is best between June and October, when the monsoon brings lush greenery, flowing streams, and misty trails. Winters (November to February) are also good if you prefer a dry trek, though the forest won’t be as vibrant. Summers are less appealing due to the heat and lack of greenery.

How to Reach Andharban

  • From Mumbai: Around 130 km; about 3–4 hours by car or bus.
  • From Pune: Around 70 km; ideal for a weekend trip.
  • Nearest Railway Station: Lonavala (50 km), with cabs available to reach Pimpri village.

Most trekkers start early in the morning to finish by afternoon, enjoying the forest in daylight and avoiding slippery paths in fading light.

Nearby Attractions

If you have extra time, consider visiting:

  • Tamhini Ghat: Known for waterfalls and foggy mountain views.
  • Devkund Waterfall: A short trek from Bhira village, perfect for a swim.
  • Mulshi Lake: Relax by the water after your trek.

Combining these spots with Andharban makes for a perfect weekend escape.

Tips for a Safe Trek

  • Hire a local guide if it’s your first time; the forest can be confusing.
  • Carry water, snacks, and waterproof bags for electronics.
  • Trekking in silence and respect enhances the forest experience.
  • Check weather conditions, as heavy rains can make some areas slippery.

Why You Should Trek Andharban

The Andharban Trek isn’t just a hike — it’s a journey into the heart of the Western Ghats. The combination of lush forests, waterfalls, and serene valleys makes it a peaceful yet adventurous escape from city life. It’s perfect for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone who enjoys monsoon magic.

Every step through the “dark forest” feels rewarding, leaving you refreshed, inspired, and eager to return.
