Chandratal Lake: Lake of the Moon – A Complete Information Guide

There’s something magical about Chandratal Lake. Maybe it’s the shape that looks like a crescent moon, or the way the water changes colours as the sun moves, or maybe it’s just the sheer feeling of being surrounded by mighty Himalayas in almost complete silence.

If you’ve been scrolling Instagram or researching treks like Hampta Pass, chances are you’ve come across dreamy pictures of this stunning lake. But trust me, pictures don’t do justice you’ve got to be there to feel it.

I visited Chandratal after completing the Hampta Pass trek, and I still remember the goosebumps I felt when I saw the lake for the first time. So, whether you’re planning to trek, drive, or just dream, here’s a complete and personal guide to help you explore the Lake of the Moon.

What is Chandratal Lake?

Chandratal, which literally means “Lake of the Moon”, is a high-altitude lake located in the Spiti region of Himachal Pradesh. At about 4,300 meters (14,100 feet) above sea level, this stunning lake is a popular camping and photography spot, especially during the summer months.

It gets its name from its crescent shape like a semi-circle or half-moon. And trust me, when the light hits the water just right, the lake glows like something out of a fairytale.

Where is Chandratal Located?

Chandratal is located in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. It lies on the Samudra Tapu plateau, near the source of the Chandra River.

  • It is about 125 km from Manali
  • Around 36 km from Kunzum Pass
  • Just a few hours' drive from Chatru, the endpoint of the Hampta Pass trek

If you're doing the Hampta Pass trek, your journey usually ends near Chatru, and from there, a drive to Chandratal is the perfect grand finale to your adventure.

Best Time to Visit Chandratal Lake

June to September is the only window when the lake is accessible.

  • June: Snow starts melting, road from Batal may still be a bit rough, but the views are stunning with leftover snow patches.
  • July & August: Best months to visit! Clear skies, wildflowers around the lake, and comfortable weather (for the mountains).
  • September: Crisp air, fewer tourists, and amazing reflections in the lake ideal for photographers.

Outside this time, the roads are closed due to heavy snow, and visiting is next to impossible.

How to Reach Chandratal Lake

There are two main ways:

1. Via Manali & Hampta Pass Trek

If you're doing the Hampta Pass trek, you'll end near Chatru. From there, most groups include a drive to Chandratal as part of the itinerary (if the road is open).

This route is perfect for trekkers because:

  • You’re already acclimatized.
  • You’ve done the hard part (climbing the pass!).
  • The lake feels like a reward after all the effort.

2. By Road from Manali or Kaza

If trekking isn’t your thing, don’t worry! You can still visit Chandratal by vehicle.

  • Manali → Rohtang Pass → Gramphu → Batal → Chandratal
  • A 2-day journey with an overnight stop at Batal or camping near the lake.

Note: The road from Batal to Chandratal (14 km) is rough, narrow, and rocky. Only experienced drivers or taxis used to mountain roads should attempt it.

Staying at Chandratal: Camps and Options

You can’t stay exactly at the lake, as camping next to the water is not allowed for environmental reasons. But campsites are set up about 1-2 km away, and staying here is an experience in itself.

Most tents include:

  • Sleeping bags & mats
  • Warm blankets
  • Basic meals (dal, rice, sabzi, roti, and of course, chai!)
  • Common dry toilets (be mentally prepared)

Bring your own torch, jacket, and tissues—the nights can get really cold and windy.

Weather at Chandratal Lake

Being at such a high altitude, the weather is unpredictable.

  • Day: 12°C to 15°C (pleasant, but strong sun)
  • Night: Drops to 0°C or even lower
  • Strong winds in the evening, especially after 4 PM

Always wear layers—a thermal inner, fleece or sweater, and a windproof jacket. Gloves and a woollen cap are musts, especially if you're camping.

What to Pack for Chandratal Visit

Here’s a quick, desi-style checklist:

  • Warm clothes (even in June, it’s cold)
  • Good trekking shoes (the lake trail can be rocky)
  • Sunglasses & sunscreen (sun at high altitude is harsh)
  • Water bottle & some snacks
  • Camera (or just a phone with space for 1000+ photos)
  • Power bank (no electricity in camps)
  • Tissues, wet wipes, and toilet paper
  • Small first aid kit

What Makes Chandratal Special?

I could list a hundred things, but here are a few:

1. Colour-Changing Waters

From deep blue in the morning to turquoise in the afternoon, and golden near sunset—it’s like the lake is showing off.

2. Stargazing

Because there’s no light pollution, the night sky is insane. I literally saw the Milky Way with my own eyes. If you’re into astrophotography or just love stars, you’ll be in heaven.

3. Peace and Silence

Unlike touristy places, Chandratal is peaceful, raw, and untouched. No network, no crowds, no distractions. Just you, the mountains, and the moon-shaped lake.

Chandratal and Hampta Pass: The Perfect Combo

Here’s why Hampta Pass + Chandratal is a dream combo:

  • You get to trek through lush green valleys (Kullu), cross a snow-covered pass (Hampta), and end in the desert-like beauty of Spiti
  • It’s a complete Himalayan experience: forests, rivers, snow, rocks, and a surreal lake
  • The trek preps your body for high altitude, so you enjoy Chandratal without struggling with AMS (altitude sickness)

If you’re doing the Hampta Pass trek, make sure your itinerary includes a visit to Chandratal. If not, ask your trek operator—they usually add it if roads are open.

A Few Tips (From Someone Who's Been There)

  1. Avoid Plastic: Please don’t litter. Carry your wrappers back.
  2. Stay Hydrated: Drink enough water, even if it’s cold. Helps avoid headaches and altitude sickness.
  3. Don’t Rush: Walk slowly around the lake. Take it all in.
  4. No Swimming: The water is freezing, and swimming is prohibited. Don’t try to be Ranbir Kapoor from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.
  5. Acclimatize Well: Spend a day in Manali or higher altitude before visiting, especially if you're driving.

Instagrammable Spots Around Chandratal

  • The rocky outcrop on the far end of the lake (best reflections)
  • Sunset shots from the hilltop just above the lake
  • Night shots of the tent with stars behind
  • Silhouettes with prayer flags and snowy peaks

And of course don’t forget a goofy photo with your gang doing a Bollywood pose near the lake.

Final Thoughts

Chandratal isn’t just a lake it’s an emotion. A place where you forget the noise of everyday life, where your mind quiets down, and you feel completely present. Whether you’re coming via Hampta Pass or driving up from Manali, it’s a spot that will stay with you long after you return.

If you’re a mountain lover, nature seeker, or even someone just looking to disconnect and reboot, Chandratal Lake should definitely be on your bucket list.

So pack that bag, grab a few close friends (or go solo!), and head off to the Lake of the Moon.
