The first thing that struck me about Dandeli wasnât the river, the forest, or even the adventureâit was the smell. That earthy, slightly sweet fragrance of wet soil mixed with the cool, crisp air of the Western Ghats. It made me realise I was finally far from city life, about to spend two days camping in one of Karnatakaâs most beautiful wild corners.
My journey began in Bangalore with a late-night bus to Hubli. The ride was smooth, and by dawn, the city skyline had been replaced with dense forests and rolling hills. From Hubli, a short cab ride took me to Dandeli, and the last stretch felt like driving through a green tunnel of towering trees.
Travellers from Goa or Pune are just as luckyâitâs a scenic drive from both, making Dandeli a great weekend escape. With Hubli Airport just 75 km away, even those flying in can reach camp without much hassle.
My campsite was tucked away on the banks of the Kali River, a slow-moving ribbon of water that gleamed silver under the morning sun. The tents were already pitched, complete with cosy mattresses and blanketsâno sleeping bag discomfort here.
The real magic happened at night. As darkness fell, the campfire came alive. Flames crackled, the river hummed in the background, and the forest whispered in the wind. With stars scattered overhead and warm food on my plate, I realised camping here wasnât about âroughing itââit was about immersing yourself in nature without giving up comfort.
Mornings in Dandeli are best spent in motion. On my first day, I joined a group for white-water raftingâthe Kali Riverâs rapids were lively but beginner-friendly, the perfect balance of thrill and safety. We also tried kayaking and the quirky coracle rides, which are round, bowl-shaped boats that feel like they belong in another era.
Later, I set out for a short jungle trek inside the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary. The forest here is alive in every senseâcolourful hornbills darted above, langurs leapt across branches, and somewhere deep in the trees, we heard the rustle of what the guide jokingly called a âcamera-shy leopard.â
Dandeli isnât just a camping spot; itâs a base for exploring natural wonders. My favourites included:
If you have more time, you can even explore Anshi National Park, now part of the Kali Tiger Reserve, for a chance to see black panthers and tigersâthough sightings are rare.
I visited in December and loved the misty mornings and pleasant daysâideal for long hours outdoors.
Camping in Dandeli is not just about ticking activities off a listâitâs about how the forest slows you down, how the riverâs rhythm becomes your own, and how the night sky here feels impossibly vast.
For me, it was more than a weekend trip. It was a reset buttonâa reminder that sometimes, the best thing you can do is sit quietly by a campfire, listen to the river, and let the forest tell you its stories.
If youâve been searching for a place thatâs wild yet welcoming, thrilling yet peaceful, Dandeli camping is where youâll find it.
