Emirates Baggage Policy: Checked and Carry-on Allowances

Carry-On Baggage: What You Can Bring Onboard

Carry-on luggage is also your best friend; it is more than carrying essential things such as medicines, electronics, change of clothes etc. Emirates allows all of its passengers in Economy, Premium Economy, Business and First Class to carry on a bag and another personal item. The allowances as per the emirates airlines baggage policy in particular class are as follows:

Economy Class Rules

Economy fliers may carry one carry-on bag that could be a cabin bag or personal bag such as a handbag or laptop bag. The maximum size is 55 x 38 x 22 cm (handles and wheels included) and the weight capacity is 7 kg. In some origins such as Brazil, there are limits which shift slightly e.g. to 10 kg or the overall linear dimensions 115 cm.

Premium Economy Rules

Premium Economy is the same as Economy in terms of dimensions (55 x 38 x 22 cm) but it offers more weight allowance of 10 kg per one piece. There is no extra baggage that is allowed.

Business/First Class Rules

As per baggage policy in emirates airlines business and First Class passengers are given two packages; a briefcase (45 x 35 x 20cm, 7 kg) and a handbag (55 x 38 x 22cm, 7 kg) or a garment bag (20 cm thick when folded). Each item must stay under 7 kg.

Liquid Regulations

The following are some of the standards that should be observed in putting the liquids on board. The volume of each container should never exceed 100 ml, and all liquid containers should be placed in one 1-liter bag, which is transparent in order to pass through the airport screening with ease.

In case of travelers with special packages like laptops, cameras, and duty-free goods (assuming they are in a secure tamper-evident bag), they are allowed on board as well. Moreover, when traveling with children, you can get strollers and car seats without charge in the hold, or board them in case there is room.

Checked Baggage Allowances by Class

Check baggage is necessary to carry bigger things such as the souvenirs and change of clothing. Emirates uses a piece compensation baggage permit on some planes (especially on those to/from the U.S. and Canada) and weight-based permit on the majority of overseas flights. The baggage policy of different classes checked is as follows:

Economy Class

As per baggage policy of emirates airline Economy applies weight allowances of 20 kg (Special), 25 kg (Saver), 30 kg (Flex), or 35 kg (Flex Plus) on routes that are based on weight. On piece concept routes (e.g. Americas, Africa), constraints are one piece to 23 kg ( Special/Saver ), or two pieces up to 23 kg ( Flex/Flex Plus ). The sizes should not be larger than 150 cm total (L+W+H) in size.

Premium Economy

Premium Economy has 2 pieces (maximum weight 23 kg/50 lbs), which are mainly on piece-concept flights, such as the Americas or Africa. Routes depending on weight concepts can be matched with increased Economy Flex limits, approximately 30-35 kg total.

Business Class

Business Class allows 40kg total weight concept routes or 2 pieces of 32kg (70lbs) each concept routes. This is applicable always in the majority of itineraries.

First Class

On weight-concept routes First Class provides 50 kg total on board or two pieces the size of 32 kg (70 lbs) on piece-concept routes.

Baggage limits may also depend on the route, in Australia and New Zealand, baggage limits are often more generous whereas on short routes such as Dubai to Abu Dhabi, the limit is 20 kg.

Fees for Excess Baggage

Emirates Airlines will also impose fees on excess baggage, depending on whether your route involves a weight concept or a piece one and the cost will be different depending on the location, time of purchase and type of baggage. Additional fees are imposed on additional weight, additional items, or overweight / oversized items that are not within the allowances. Advance purchases in advance of up to 4 hours before travel are discounted, frequently 50% of the initial additional item in Economy.

Weight Concept Fees

On weight-based routes (most international flights not in Americas/Africa), the airport fee to add excess weight is $ 15-50 per kg, which is reduced to $ 10-30 per kg with a pre-payment. Bags that are more than 32 kg or those that are more than 150 cm L +W +H cost $75-150 each.

Piece Concept Fees

Piece routes (e.g. Americas, Africa) cost $200-400 additional pieces at airports, with online Economy discounts: 50% off first additional bag (100), 20% off additional ones. Pieces fall into overweight category (priced at $75), oversized category (priced at $250), and even a combined category (priced at $325-400).
