Exploring the Scotland of India: A 3-Day Coorg Tour Itinerary

Coorg, or Kodagu, is one of those places that immediately slows down your pace. Nestled in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, it’s known as the “Scotland of India” for its misty hills, coffee plantations, and laid-back charm. If you’re planning a short trip, a 3 days Coorg tour package is just right—you get enough time to enjoy its highlights without feeling rushed.

I did a 3-day trip to Coorg not too long ago, and here’s how I’d recommend spending your days for the perfect balance of sightseeing, nature, and downtime.

Day 1: Madikeri and First Impressions

Most tours to Coorg start in Madikeri, the district headquarters and the heart of most attractions. After checking into your hotel or homestay (I’d recommend a plantation stay if you want an authentic experience), you can start exploring nearby spots.

Raja’s Seat is a great introduction. It’s a simple garden, but the valley views are especially magical at sunset. From there, you can stroll around Madikeri Fort and Omkareshwara Temple, both small but interesting glimpses into the region’s culture and history. In the evening, don’t miss wandering through the local markets—this is where you’ll find homemade chocolates, spices, and of course, freshly ground coffee.

Tip: Try a local Coorgi dinner at a homestay or small restaurant. Pandi curry (pork curry) with akki rotti (rice flatbread) is a local favorite.

Day 2: Waterfalls, Wildlife, and Elephants

Day 2 is where Coorg’s natural beauty really shines. Start your morning at Abbey Falls, about 10 km from Madikeri. The walk through coffee plantations to reach the falls is as refreshing as the sight of the cascading water itself.

Next, head to Dubare Elephant Camp. This is one of the most unique experiences in Coorg—you get to watch, feed, and sometimes even bathe elephants. It’s not just fun but also educational, especially if you’re traveling with kids.

From there, you can continue to Nisargadhama, a forest island surrounded by the Cauvery River. It’s a peaceful place with hanging bridges, bamboo groves, and even deer enclosures. By evening, return to Madikeri or relax in your homestay with a hot cup of coffee while listening to the sounds of the forest.

Day 3: Scenic Drives and Spiritual Stops

On your last day, take a slightly longer drive to Talacauvery, the origin of the Cauvery River, located in the Brahmagiri Hills. The temple there is serene, but the real highlight is the view of rolling misty hills all around. If you’re feeling energetic, climb the nearby steps for a panoramic view—it’s a perfect way to wrap up the trip.

On the way back, you can also stop by Bhagamandala, a confluence of three rivers that holds spiritual significance. Before heading home, stock up on local honey, spices, and packets of Coorg coffee—they make great souvenirs.

Best Time to Visit Coorg

The best time to visit Coorg is between October and March, when the weather is cool and pleasant, making it ideal for outdoor activities. Monsoon (June to September) paints the hills a lush green, but heavy rains can disrupt travel plans. Summers (April–May) are warmer but still much cooler than nearby cities like Bangalore.

Budgeting and Tips

  • Travel: Coorg is best reached from Bangalore (about 5–6 hours by road). Hiring a cab or joining a package tour makes it easier.
  • Stay: Homestays are the most popular choice, ranging from budget to luxury. Prices vary from ₹1500 to ₹6000 per night depending on comfort.
  • Food: Don’t miss local Coorgi cuisine, especially if you’re a non-vegetarian. Vegetarian options are also widely available.
  • Clothing: Carry light woolens for evenings, especially in winter, as temperatures can drop.
  • Safety: Coorg is generally safe for travelers, but be cautious on winding ghat roads, especially during rains.

Final Thoughts

Three days in Coorg is just enough to enjoy the essence of the region—lush coffee estates, waterfalls, wildlife, and a touch of local culture. It’s the kind of trip that leaves you refreshed rather than exhausted, making it perfect for a weekend escape or a short holiday.

If you’re someone who loves a mix of nature, culture, and relaxation, a 3 days Coorg tour package might be exactly what you’re looking for. Just don’t forget to bring back some Coorg coffee—you’ll thank yourself later.
