There is no doubt that planning a honeymoon is quite taxing. What's better than getting away from all the noise and relatives after a series of loud parties and weddings? There is no doubt that all that one needs is to get away from all the noise and chaos. This is exactly the reason that a Darjeeling honeymoon package is the most popular choice. But before we get down to the packing of the luggage and whatnot, what exactly must one do to enjoy the place and not be classified as a typical tourist?
The Vibe: It’s Not About Luxury, It’s About "The Feel"
Darjeeling wasn’t anything like those posh, modern hill resorts. It’s old, wooden, and slightly magical. The streets are steep, the air smells of tea and wood smoke, and there is always a thick mist (fog) rolling in. If you want to have a honeymoon where you just slow down, hold hands, and walk through the fog, then you will love it here.
Every travel agent is going to tell you to go to Tiger Hill at 4:00 AM.
The Truth: It's freezing and really crowded. But when the sun finally hits the peaks of Mount Kanchenjunga and turns them from grey into bright gold, you'll never forget this moment.
Tip for Couples: Avoid the mainland yelling crowd, find a corner, share a blanket, and simply watch the colors change on these mountains. It's the best "welcome to the Himalayas" you'd get.
The Toy Train is slow, super slow. It takes 2 hours to cover only 10 km. But that’s the point! This UNESCO World Heritage site feels like a time machine. It whistles through the town, passing right by people's front doors. It’s cute, nostalgic, and the perfect excuse to sit close and look out the window together.
Food is an enormous part of the romance.
Glenary’s Bakery: You have to go here. It is a 100-year-old bakery with big windows. Sit at those windows with a pot of Darjeeling tea and a piece of cake while the clouds drift by outside.
Kunga’s: For the best hot momos and soup. When the weather is cold and rainy outside, hot momos on the plate are happiness personified.
Keventers: Known for their milkshakes and the open terrace view. It’s a prime location for breakfast on a sunny morning.
Lepchajagat: A small village is nearby. It is just pines and silence. Walking through the forest is like a movie.
Tea Garden Walks: Visit the Happy Valley Tea Estate. Don't merely view it from the roadside; walk down into the tea bushes. The aroma of fresh tea leaves carried by the moist air is incredible.
Over-planning your day: Don't try to visit 10 "points" in one single day. You'll be in a taxi all day and are likely to get really tired. Instead, pick two spots and spend the rest of the day walking.
Wrong Time: Don't go in the monsoon, that is, during July to August. It would be beautiful and green, but you will not be able to see the mountains because of clouds, and landslides may spoil your plans.
Not walking: Darjeeling was constructed with walkers in mind. Slip on comfortable sneakers and do some walking; though your legs may ache, this is the way to see the best hidden views and smallest stores.
Best time to visit: October-December period to enjoy a clear mountainous view; from March to May, during which the flowers and trees clad with greenery will be a wonderful scene.
How long to stay: It is perfect for 4 to 5 days. Budget: You can find cozy homestays for ₹2,000 or heritage hotels for ₹20,000. There’s something to suit every pocket.
Q: Is it safe for couples?
Very safe. The local population is well-mannered and cooperative. Even walking around the main areas in the evening is not a problem.
Q: How do we reach Darjeeling?
Fly to Bagdogra Airport. Then it’s a 3-hour taxi drive up the hills. The view during the drive is fabulous as you pass through the tea estates.
Q: What should we pack?
It gets cool at night even in the summer. Bring a good jacket, a light sweater, and an umbrella—it can rain at any time in the mountains.
"You don’t go to Darjeeling to check boxes. You go there to start your new life together in peace." It is about the tea, the mountain air, and the moments. If you’re looking for a honeymoon that is real and romantic, Darjeeling is waiting for you.
