Here are some of the most breathtaking destinations in the Garhwal Himalayas, along with the peaks you can witness from each trail or viewpoint.
Kuari Pass, a classic Himalayan trek in Chamoli district, offers wide-open vistas of some of the most iconic Garhwal peaks. The loop route from Dhak or Tugasi climbs to 12,500 ft (3,800 m) over 33 km, making it an easy to moderate trek ideal for most fitness levels.
From the kuari pass, trekkers are rewarded with sweeping views of Nanda Devi, Dronagiri, Hathi-Ghoda, Kamet, Chaukhamba, Trishul, Neelkanth, and several other snow-covered summits. Every season transforms the scenery from a snow wonderland in winter to vibrant meadows in spring.
Chaukhamba Peak
This UNESCO World Heritage Site turns into a painterâs palette every monsoon. Starting from Govindghat, the trek passes through Ghangaria before opening into an alpine valley bursting with over 500 plant species.
The backdrop is equally mesmerising, with peaks like Nilgiri Parbat, Rataban, Gauri Parbat, and the snow-covered ridge of Saptrishi towering over the valley. The sight of colourful blooms against towering Himalayan giants is a photographerâs dream.
Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world, sits at 12,073 ft (3,680 m) and is steeped in spiritual significance. Just above lies Chandrashila Peak, a short but rewarding climb for one of the best panoramic views in Garhwal.
From Chandrashilaâs summit, you can witness Kedarnath Peak, Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Trishul, Bandarpoonch, and countless other ridges stretching into the horizon. The sunrise here is particularly famous for painting the peaks in gold.
Known as the âValley of Gods,â Har Ki Dun blends natural beauty with cultural richness. The trek climbs to 11,675 ft (3,558 m) through charming wooden villages, dense pine forests, and open meadows.
From the valley, trekkers can gaze upon Swargarohini (I, II, III), Bandarpoonch, Kalanag, and Jaundhar Glacier. The dramatic backdrop of these peaks adds a mythical aura to the landscape.
Auli is not just a skiing paradise in winter but also a year-round vantage point for Himalayan views. At around 8,200 ft (2,500 m), it offers comfortable access without heavy trekking.
From here, you can enjoy uninterrupted views of Nanda Devi, Mana Parvat, Hathi Parbat, Kamet, and Dunagiri, especially from the famous Auli Ropeway. On clear days, the sightlines stretch for miles across the snow-draped Garhwal range.
Hathi Parbat
Set in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, Kedarkantha is one of Indiaâs most popular winter treks. The summit at 12,500 ft (3,800 m) offers a 360° panorama of snow-clad Himalayan peaks.
From the top, you can see Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak (Kalanag), Yamunotri range, and even distant glimpses of Gangotri and Draupadi Ka Danda. In winter, these peaks stand out brilliantly against the clear blue skies.
