The Hampta Pass Trek is a captivating trip that adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers are drawn to. Located in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas, this trek provides you with a stunning contrast of landscapes that go from lush green valleys to barren deserts. This guide gives you all the information needed to prepare for this amazing adventure.
The diverse landscape along the way has made Hampta a household name among trekkers. It starts with Kullu Valley’s green meadows before gradually moving into Lahaul and Spiti’s arid rocky terrains. You will pass through thick pine forests, vast open valleys, glacial rivers and snow-covered peaks along your way.
Begin trekking from Manali where a drive will take you up to Jobra, which serves as a starting point for this trekking expedition. The trail to Chika ascends gently through pine-, maple- and oak-covered forests. At Chika campsite, there are also lush environs ideal for relaxation and acclimatization.
On day two; cross Rani Nallah before traversing boulder-strewn paths. The path to Balu ka Gera is a gradual ascent as the scenery shifts from green meadows to rocky patches. Balu Ka Ghera campsite overlooks snow-capped peaks and provides the best view of the Himalayas.
This is arguably the toughest day when trekking up the Hampta pass. The trail becomes steep and sometimes slippery due to snow thus a very difficult task for climbers. Once at its top, one enjoys panoramic vistas of Pir Panjal and Spiti ranges all around him/her. While descending to Siagoru be careful through this steep way. In contrast, the Siagoru campsite is located in a barren, cold wilderness.
The descent from Siagoru to Chatru has a gradual slope making it easier than the previous day’s walking stretch. Chatru is situated where River Chandra meets Rivers Spiti and Bhaga. Trek may also visit Chandratal Lake which is known for its clear waters and stunning beauty.
The last day ends with a drive back to Manali hence concluding this trekking event. On your way back you will catch sight of the desolate Spiti Valley gradually giving way to green Kullu Valley.
Hampta pass trek is a moderately difficult one, therefore it is important to be in good physical condition. Running, swimming or biking regularly and supplemented with strength training are cardio exercises that can help you prepare your body for the trek. It is also advisable to spend some days in Manali before the trek to acclimatize well.
Before embarking on the Hampta Pass Trek, necessary permits must be acquired from the forest department located in Manali. These permits are required for camping as well as trekking within this area. Similarly, if you are planning on visiting Chandra Tal Lake then you may need another permit issued separately for that purpose too.
Accommodation during the Hampta Pass Trek is provided at three designated camping sites: Chika, Balu Ka Ghera, and Siagoru. Each night, you'll set up camp in these scenic locations, with tents, sleeping bags, and mats typically included in most trekking packages. The meals provided by trekking companies are simple yet nutritious, designed to keep your energy levels high throughout the journey.
Expect a variety of basic but hearty dishes that are easy to digest and sustaining, perfect for the demands of trekking in the mountains. These campsites offer a chance to unwind in the serene wilderness, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Himalayas, making each night a restful retreat after a day of adventure.
More than a trek, The Hampta Pass Trek is a journey through the most dissimilar landscapes in the Himalayas. Every step brings to view a new dimension right from Kullu Valley’s thick vegetation down to Spiti’s aridness and starkness. This is a perfect choice for those who love adventure and getting close to nature. Whether you are an expert hiker or a novice, it offers you every moment of satisfaction.
