How I Cleaned Up My Website and Finally Got Google to Notice Me

I’ll be honest—when I launched my website, I thought that was the hard part. I spent weeks picking a clean design, writing a decent copy, and even added a blog. But a few months in, something didn’t sit right.

No one was visiting.

Not even a trickle of traffic from search engines. Just silence.

It wasn’t until I stumbled across the idea of an SEO audit that I realized how many cracks were hiding underneath the surface. It wasn’t about how the site looked—it was about how search engines saw it.

And trust me, they didn’t see much.

Starting With the Basics (Even Though I Didn’t Want To)

I didn’t want to run a bunch of tools or learn coding. I wanted simple answers. So I did what anyone would do—I Googled. What I found was surprising: most of the things hurting my site weren’t complicated at all.

There were pages with missing titles. Some blog posts didn’t even have descriptions. A few pages took forever to load because the images were too big. And there were broken links pointing nowhere.

It’s like building a shop and forgetting to put a sign on the door.

What I Fixed (Without Hiring Anyone)

I didn’t hire an SEO agency or buy expensive software. Instead, I started fixing things on my own, one step at a time:

  • Wrote better, clearer page titles that actually told people what the page was about
  • Cut out unnecessary plugins that were slowing my site down
  • Checked every link—internal and external—to make sure nothing was broken
  • Made sure every blog post had one focus and actually helped someone solve a small problem
  • Added alt text to all my images so they weren’t just floating there without purpose

These changes didn’t feel huge while I was doing them. But they added up.

What Happened Next Surprised Me

A couple of weeks after the fixes, I started noticing small things.

My pages began showing up when I searched certain topics. One of my older blog posts even got a handful of shares on social media. Google started indexing more of my content. My site wasn’t blowing up—but it was no longer invisible either.

That felt like progress. And all of it started with that simple website audit.

The Biggest Lesson?

Many people claim that SEO can be difficult. In reality, most sites struggle with some really basic problems that usually stem from a lack of information, slow speed, disorganized structure, and content that doesn’t speak to any user.

When we discuss audits, we’re really trying to come up with clarity—not to find an issue.

After you’ve taken the time to clean up your website, everything else falls into place. Search engines see it. Visitors stay longer. Bounce rate decreases. And most importantly—you’ll finally feel like you’re getting seen for all the work you’ve done.

In Summary

If you’re not getting traffic, don’t dive into paid ads or sophisticated targeting strategies. Start with auditing your site. Experience the site as a visitor. Ask yourself “Would I stay on this page if I landed here?”

It is as easy as that—but that change in perspective is everything.
