Kedarkantha Trek: A Simple Guide for Your First Snow Adventure

If you are planning to see the Himalayas for the first time, Kedarkantha is the best place to start. It is a very beautiful trek in Uttarakhand and perfect for people who have never trekked before. In this guide, I will tell you everything in simple words so you can plan your trip without any confusion.

Why is Kedarkantha so famous?

The best thing about this trek is the snow. From December to March, the whole mountain looks white. Walking through the tall pine trees covered in snow feels like a dream. Also, reaching the top (12,500 feet) gives you a great feeling of achievement, and it is not too dangerous for beginners.

How to reach there?

First, you need to reach Dehradun. From there, you have to take a long drive to a small village called Sankri. It takes about 8 to 10 hours. Sankri is a very peaceful and beautiful place. This is where your actual walk starts.

The 5-Day Journey

Usually, the trek takes around 5 to 6 days. On the first day of walking, you reach a place called Juda Ka Talab. It is a small lake that freezes completely in winter. Sleeping in tents near a frozen lake under the stars is an experience you will never forget. The next day, you move to the Base Camp. From here, you can see the peak clearly. The most important day is the "Summit Day." We usually start walking at 2 or 3 in the morning when it is very dark and cold. It is a bit hard, but when you reach the top and see the sun rising over the big mountains, all your tiredness will go away.

Do you need to be very fit?

Many people ask if they need to go to the gym for this. The answer is—No. If you can walk for 30-40 minutes daily or do a little jogging, you are ready. You just need a strong mind to keep walking when you feel tired.

Some helpful tips:

  • Keep your bag light: Don't pack too many clothes. A heavy bag will make you tired very fast.
  • Drink water: Even if you don't feel thirsty because of the cold, keep drinking water. It helps your body adjust to the height.
  • Good shoes are a must: Don't wear normal sneakers. You need trekking shoes with a good grip so you don't slip on the ice.

What should you pack?

  • Wear Layers: Instead of one big heavy jacket, wear 3-4 thin layers (like a t-shirt, then a sweater, then a jacket). This keeps you warmer.
  • Sunscreen: The sun is very strong on the mountains and can burn your skin.
  • Extra Socks: Always keep your feet dry. If your socks get wet in the snow, change them immediately.

Common Questions People Ask (FAQs)

1. Is it safe for solo travelers or girls?

Yes, it is very safe. Many people go alone and join a group. The local people and guides are very helpful and take good care of everyone.

2. What about toilets on the trek?

There are no proper toilets in the mountains. We use small toilet tents with pits in the ground. It is a bit different, but you will get used to it.

3. Will I get mobile network?

You will get a network in Sankri village, but once you start walking up, the signal will go away. It is good to stay away from your phone for a few days.

4. What kind of food do we get?

You get fresh and hot vegetarian food like Dal, Rice, and Vegetables. It is simple but tastes great when you are hungry on the mountains.

5. Which is the best month to go?

If you want to see a lot of snow, go between late December and February. If you like greenery, April and May are better.
