Kedarkantha Trek from Delhi: A Winter Journey into the Himalayas

Some treks leave you breathless with their views, while others touch your soul with their silence. The Kedarkantha trek from Delhi offers both—a thrilling adventure through pine forests, snow-covered trails, and starry campsites, ending with a panoramic view of the Himalayas that feels straight out of a dream.

At 12,500 feet, Kedarkantha is one of the most loved winter treks in India. What makes it even more special is how easily it connects with Delhi, making it an accessible yet life-changing escape for city dwellers craving mountains and peace.

Getting There: Delhi to Sankri

The journey usually begins late evening from Kashmiri Gate ISBT in Delhi. Overnight buses and shared taxis take you to Dehradun or Haridwar. From there, Sankri—the base village for the trek—is about a 7–8 hour drive through winding mountain roads.

The drive itself feels like a warm-up for the trek. As you pass through Mussoorie, pine forests, and tiny Garhwal villages, the city noise fades into quiet valleys and the air turns crisp. By the time you reach Sankri (6,400 ft), surrounded by snow-dusted peaks, you already feel the adventure beginning.

Best Time to Visit Kedarkantha

The trek is open most of the year, but December to April is when it truly shines. Snow blankets the trails, the campsites glow under star-filled skies, and the summit climb feels magical.

If you’re not a fan of extreme cold, March–April is a good choice when the snow starts melting but the meadows bloom with rhododendrons.

The Trekking Experience: Step by Step

Day 1: Sankri to Juda Ka Talab (4 km)

The first day warms you up with an easy but scenic climb. Towering pine trees, tiny wooden huts, and the sound of crunching snow guide you to Juda Ka Talab, a frozen lake with an almost fairytale-like charm. Camping here under a clear sky is an experience in itself.

Day 2: Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp (4 km)

The trail gets steeper, but the rewards are greater. As you climb higher, the Swargarohini and Bandarpoonch peaks appear in the distance. By evening, you’re at base camp (11,250 ft), where the cold bites sharper, but a hot bowl of rajma chawal feels like heaven.

Day 3: Summit Push (6 km up and down)

This is the day that makes it all worth it. You start before dawn, with your headlamp lighting the way, and step into untouched snow under a sky full of stars. The summit climb is challenging, but when you finally stand at 12,500 ft, the 360° view of the Himalayas leaves you speechless. Peaks like Black Peak, Gangotri, and Swargarohini shine in golden hues as the sun rises—this moment is pure magic.

Day 4: Descend to Sankri

The return feels lighter, though your heart might ache a little at leaving the snowy meadows. By afternoon, you’re back in Sankri, ready to drive back to Dehradun and onward to Delhi.

Suggested Itinerary from Delhi

  • Day 0: Overnight bus/train from Delhi to Dehradun/Haridwar.
  • Day 1: Drive to Sankri. Overnight stay.
  • Day 2–3: Trek to Juda Ka Talab and base camp.
  • Day 4: Summit Kedarkantha and return to base.
  • Day 5: Drive back to Dehradun, then Delhi.

A 5–6 day plan works best, keeping some buffer for travel and weather delays.

Budgeting Your Trek

  • Delhi to Dehradun bus/train: ₹500–₹1,200
  • Dehradun to Sankri shared cab: ₹1,200–₹1,500 per person
  • Trek package (meals, guide, stay, equipment): ₹6,500–₹8,500 per person
  • Miscellaneous (rentals, snacks, tips): ₹1,000–₹2,000

On average, the trek costs around ₹9,000–₹12,000 depending on whether you go with an operator or plan it independently.

Local Tips for a Smooth Trek

  • Pack light but warm: Thermals, gloves, and waterproof shoes are a must.
  • Stay hydrated: Cold weather masks thirst, so keep sipping water.
  • Carry cash: Sankri has no ATMs or card facilities.
  • Respect nature: Don’t litter, and follow guides’ instructions.
  • Prepare physically: Regular jogging or stair climbing helps with stamina.

Why Kedarkantha Trek is Special

Unlike many Himalayan treks, Kedarkantha gives maximum rewards for relatively moderate effort. Within a few days, you experience forests, frozen lakes, snowy meadows, and a breathtaking summit.

For me, Kedarkantha wasn’t just about reaching 12,500 feet—it was about the small moments: sharing stories with strangers by a campfire, sipping chai while snowflakes fell, and standing still at dawn with nothing but mountains around.

If you’re from Delhi and want to step away from the city chaos, the Kedarkantha trek from Delhi is one of the best winter escapes. It’s not just a trek—it’s a reminder of how simple and beautiful life can be in the mountains.
