If you love misty hills, green forests, and the sound of waterfalls, the Kodachadri Trek is a must-do. Located in the Shimoga district of Karnataka, Kodachadri is a beautiful mix of adventure, peace, and mythology. Itâs one of those treks that feel both wild and spiritual at the same time.
Kodachadri stands at about 1,343 meters above sea level. It is part of the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary. The name âKodachadriâ means Jasmine of the Hills. When you reach the top, the rolling green hills and drifting clouds truly live up to that name.
According to legend, Goddess Mookambika fought and defeated a demon named Mookasura here. The famous Mookambika Temple at Kollur, located at the base of Kodachadri, is dedicated to her. This adds a sacred charm to the trek.
The nearest town is Kollur, about 20 km away. From Bangalore, it takes around 8 to 9 hours by road (about 400 km). You can also reach Kodachadri from Udupi (100 km) or Shimoga (115 km). Buses run regularly from Bangalore to Kollur and Nittur. The nearest railway stations are Byndoor and Shimoga. The closest airport is Mangalore International Airport (130 km). From Kollur or Nittur, you can hire a jeep to reach Nagodi village, the starting point of the trek.
The Kodachadri Trek is around 10â12 km long (one way). The trail passes through thick forests, streams, and meadows. Itâs moderately difficult and suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers.
The path starts from the forest. Youâll hear birds, the rustle of leaves, and sometimes the splash of hidden waterfalls. One of the highlights is the Hidlumane Falls â a stunning, multi-layered waterfall. Youâll need to climb rocks and walk through water to reach it. Itâs a bit challenging but worth it.
After the falls, the path becomes steeper. The forest slowly opens into grasslands with beautiful valley views. If the weather is clear, you can even spot the Arabian Sea far away.
At the top, youâll find a small Shankaracharya Temple where Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have meditated. Watching the sunset from here is unforgettable â the sky turns orange, and the clouds move gently below your feet.
Day 1: Travel from Bangalore to Kollur or Nittur. Reach by evening and stay overnight in a homestay near the base.
Day 2: Start the trek early morning. Stop at Hidlumane Falls for rest. Reach the top by afternoon. Watch the sunset, and return by jeep or camp overnight at the summit.
Day 3: Visit Mookambika Temple in Kollur and nearby spots before heading back.
If youâre trekking during the rainy season, start early and carry rain gear. The trail gets slippery after rain.
The best time to do the Kodachadri Trek is between October and February. The weather is cool, and the views are clear.
The monsoon months (June to September) are beautiful but risky. The trail becomes slippery, and leeches are common. Still, the waterfalls and greenery are at their best then. Avoid trekking in summer (March to May) when it gets hot and dry.
After the trek, you can explore nearby spots. The Kollur Mookambika Temple is a must-visit for its spiritual significance. History lovers can visit Nagara Fort, an old structure surrounded by a calm lake.
If you love nature, go to Arasinagundi Falls or drive to Maravanthe Beach, where the highway runs between the sea and a river. You can also visit Murudeshwar Temple, famous for its huge Shiva statue and beachside views.
Trekking in Kodachadri needs basic fitness. The forest trail can be confusing, so itâs best to hire a local guide. Theyâll help you find safe paths and show you the best spots.
Here are a few tips:
A Kodachadri Trek usually costs â¹3,000 to â¹6,000 per person, depending on your group, travel, and stay. If you take a jeep ride down from the top, it costs around â¹500ââ¹700 per person.
The Kodachadri Trek is more than just a climb â itâs an experience that stays with you. Itâs about walking through mist, hearing your footsteps echo in the forest, and feeling tiny before natureâs beauty.
Kodachadri still feels untouched. It doesnât have crowds or noise. It gives you silence, peace, and connection with the wild.
If you love nature, adventure, or just want a quiet escape, this trek has it all. When you finally stand at the top, watching the sunset over the Ghats, youâll know the journey was worth every step.
