Iâll be honestânothing prepared me for the magic of the Kodachadri Trek. Not the YouTube videos. Not the Instagram reels. Not even the guidebooks. You have to feel the mist wrap around you, hear the forest breathe, and watch the sun paint the hills to truly understand why Kodachadri isnât just a trekâitâs a soulful experience.
If youâre planning your first visit or still wondering whether itâs worth the climbâthis detailed blog will give you all the answers, along with a personal peek into what itâs really like to trek through one of Karnatakaâs most enchanting trails.
Kodachadri is located in the Shimoga district of Karnataka, rising proudly within the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary. The trek starts from either Nittur or Valur, and reaching the base is part of the adventure.
From Bangalore, itâs around 400 km by road. I boarded a KSRTC night bus to Kollur, followed by a jeep ride to Nittur. If you're coming from Mangalore (about 170 km), private cabs or buses are also available.
Alternate routes include:
Donât expect full mobile network after Kollurâdownload your maps and inform someone before heading in.
We began the trek early in the morning from Valur, with foggy skies and cool, earthy air. The Hidlumane Waterfalls route, though slightly tougher, was too beautiful to skip. It felt like walking through a scene from a forest fairytaleâdense vegetation, glistening leaves, and silence broken only by the sound of flowing water.
After scrambling over a few rocks and getting happily drenched near the waterfall, we pushed into the heart of Mookambika Sanctuary. This stretch was surrealâgiant trees, leeches if youâre trekking in monsoon, and the occasional monkey watching you with curiosity.
As we gained altitude, the canopy opened up into grasslands, and we saw the Sarvajna Peethaâa stone structure where Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have meditated. Just beyond that, the Kodachadri peak stood tall at 1,343 meters, offering views that made every step worth it.
Letâs talk weatherâbecause it can make or break your trek.
I went in early December, and the weather was perfectâcool mornings, warm days, and clear views from the summit.
We decided to camp overnight near the summit, and it turned out to be one of the best parts of the journey. With barely any light pollution, the stars were unbelievable. If you're into stargazing or just want to sit by a campfire with strangers-turned-friends, camping is the way to go.
The next morning, we descended via the famous Kodachadri Jeep Trailâone of the bumpiest, craziest rides Iâve ever taken. These jeeps are beasts that tackle steep rocky terrain like itâs nothing. Itâs rough, but honestly, a fun experience on its own.
For those who arenât up for trekking both ways, this jeep ride is a great optionâjust book in advance from the temple area at the top.
Youâve come all the way to the Western Ghatsâwhy rush back? There are some beautiful spots near Kodachadri worth adding to your itinerary:

Budget estimation:
The Kodachadri Trek is one of those trails that stays with you long after your shoes are back in the closet. Itâs raw, real, and incredibly rewarding. You donât just walk through natureâyou walk through legends, listen to silence, and feel something deep shift within you.
Whether youâre a seasoned trekker or just getting started, Kodachadri is the perfect mix of adventure, culture, and nature. So if youâre planning your next weekend trekking getaway from Bangalore, skip the touristy trails and head straight for this hidden gem in the Ghats.
And once youâre standing at the peak, clouds swirling below you, heart full and legs tiredâyouâll know exactly why I keep coming back to the mountains.
