Kurinjal Trek: A Hidden Gem in Kudremukh National Park

Sometimes, the best adventures are the ones that are least talked about. While most trekkers rush to Kudremukh Peak, I stumbled upon the lesser-known Kurinjal Trek—and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding journeys I’ve ever taken in the Western Ghats. If you love raw trails, dense forests, and panoramic views without the heavy crowd, this trek deserves a place on your bucket list.

Why I Chose the Kurinjal Trek

I had been craving a weekend escape from city chaos, and Kudremukh National Park had always been on my radar. When I read about Kurinjal Trek being less crowded yet equally stunning compared to Kudremukh Peak, I knew I had found my next adventure.

Kurinjal is a moderate-level trek nestled deep inside Kudremukh National Park in Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka. What makes it special is its blend of dense shola forests, sprawling grasslands, and ridge walks that offer sweeping views of the Western Ghats. It’s also one of those treks where the journey feels as beautiful as the summit.

The Journey to Kudremukh National Park

Reaching the base of Kurinjal was an adventure in itself. I boarded an overnight bus from Bangalore to Kalasa, a small town about 10 km away from the trek’s entry point. From there, a jeep ride through winding coffee estates and misty hills brought me to the Kudremukh National Park checkpoint.

The forest department requires trekkers to register and pay a nominal entry fee. This not only ensures safety but also helps preserve the fragile ecosystem of the park. With my permits in hand, I felt a rush of excitement—the trail ahead was waiting.

The Trekking Experience

The Kurinjal trek is about 7 km one way, making it roughly a 14 km round trip. On paper, it sounds manageable, but the real charm lies in the variety of landscapes it unfolds.

Through the Shola Forests

The first stretch took me through thick shola forests where sunlight barely filtered through the canopy. The trail was alive with the sounds of chirping birds, rustling leaves, and the occasional gurgle of hidden streams. Every breath felt fresher, every step quieter.

Climbing Through Grasslands

As I moved higher, the trees gave way to wide rolling grasslands. This was my favourite part of the trek—the golden grass swaying in the wind, mist rolling in and out, and the mountains layered endlessly on the horizon. The views reminded me why the Western Ghats are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Ridge Walk and Summit

The last stretch was a ridge walk that tested my stamina but rewarded me with sweeping views of the Kudremukh ranges. Standing at the summit of Kurinjal, with clouds floating around and valleys stretching endlessly below, I felt a deep sense of calm. It wasn’t just about conquering a peak; it was about reconnecting with nature in its rawest form.

Best Time to Do the Kurinjal Trek

The beauty of Kurinjal changes with every season, but not all seasons are trek-friendly.

  • Post-Monsoon (September to February): The best time. The forests are lush, skies are clear, and views are stunning.
  • Summer (March to May): Trekking is possible, but afternoons can get quite hot in the open grasslands. Start early.
  • Monsoon (June to August): The trail becomes slippery, leech-infested, and often restricted by the forest department. Best avoided unless you’re an experienced monsoon trekker.

I went in October, and it was perfect—green hills, clear skies, and pleasant weather.

Budget and Essentials

Kurinjal Trek is budget-friendly compared to many Himalayan treks, making it a great option for weekend adventurers.

  • Entry Fees: Around ₹275 per person (includes forest permit).
  • Guide Charges: A local guide is mandatory and usually costs ₹500–₹1000 per group.
  • Stay: Options include homestays in Kalasa or Kudremukh town (₹800–₹1500 per night with meals).
  • Food: Carry packed lunch for the trek, as there are no food stalls inside the forest.

Packing tips:

  • Comfortable trekking shoes with good grip.
  • 2 litres of water and light snacks.
  • Rain jacket (weather changes quickly in the Ghats).
  • Cap, sunscreen, and a walking stick for support.

Local Experiences Around Kurinjal

The trek may be the highlight, but Kudremukh National Park has much more to offer. If you have an extra day, here’s what I’d suggest:

  • Hanuman Gundi Falls – A refreshing waterfall hidden inside the park.
  • Gangamoola – The origin point of three rivers: Tunga, Bhadra, and Netravathi.
  • Coffee Plantations in Kalasa – A must-visit for coffee lovers.
  • Kudremukh Peak Trek – The more popular cousin of Kurinjal, great if you’re staying longer.

Exploring these spots made my trip feel wholesome, like a blend of adventure and cultural immersion.

Safety and Responsible Trekking

One thing I learned on this trek is how important it is to respect the forest. Kudremukh is home to wildlife like Malabar civets, leopards, and barking deer. While sightings are rare, it’s essential to stick to the trails and avoid disturbing the ecosystem.

  • Do not litter—carry back all plastic waste.
  • Avoid loud noises; the forest is best enjoyed in silence.
  • Travel in small groups; it keeps the experience intimate and eco-friendly.

Final Thoughts: Why Kurinjal Trek Stole My Heart

Kurinjal Trek may not be as famous as Kudremukh Peak, but that’s exactly why I loved it. The trail felt untouched, the views were soul-stirring, and the silence of the mountains stayed with me long after I returned home.

If you’re someone who loves discovering hidden gems and doesn’t mind a bit of physical challenge, Kurinjal will reward you with an unforgettable experience. It’s not just a trek; it’s a journey into the heart of the Western Ghats, where every step reminds you how small you are and how vast nature can be.

So the next time you plan a trip to Chikkamagaluru, skip the usual crowd and give Kurinjal Trek a try. Who knows, you might just find the same peace I did—up there, in the middle of mist and mountains.
