If youâre someone who loves offbeat treks, lush greenery, and misty mountain trails, the Kurinjal peak trek should definitely be on your radar. Nestled in the Western Ghats near Chikmagalur, Karnataka, this trek is a perfect blend of adventure and serenity. I recently completed it, and it was an experience that reminded me why I fell in love with trekking in the first place â peaceful forests, panoramic views, and that indescribable feeling of reaching a peak surrounded by clouds.
Kurinjal is often overshadowed by popular trails like Kudremukh or Tadiandamol, but thatâs exactly what makes it special. The trek starts from the small village near the foothills and ascends gradually through dense forests, coffee plantations, and grassy slopes. Itâs a moderate trek, around 7â8 km one way, making it ideal for both beginners and seasoned trekkers looking for a day-long adventure without the crowds.
The highlight of this trek is its serene landscapes. You pass through thick forests where sunlight barely touches the ground, giving the trail a magical, almost otherworldly feel. By the time you reach the summit, youâre rewarded with sweeping views of the Western Ghats, waterfalls in the distance, and rolling green hills that stretch as far as the eye can see.
The ideal time for Kurinjal Trek is post-monsoon, from September to February. During these months, the forest is lush, the air is crisp, and the trails are safe to navigate. Monsoon (JuneâAugust) makes the trek extremely scenic with flowing streams and misty trails, but it can also be slippery and leech-infested, so extra precautions are needed.
Kurinjal is best accessed via Chikmagalur, which is about 250 km from Bangalore. From Chikmagalur, you can hire a local taxi or drive to the trailhead. Public transport is limited, so planning ahead is recommended.
If youâre spending more time in the region, there are plenty of attractions nearby:
While the trek isnât extremely challenging, certain sections can get steep and slippery. Walking poles and proper footwear make a huge difference. Also, remember to respect nature â avoid littering and stick to marked trails.
A simple day trek from Chikmagalur can be done on a budget of â¹1,500â2,000 per person, including transport, guide (if needed), and snacks. Hereâs a suggested itinerary:
The Kurinjal Trek is a hidden gem for anyone who loves nature, adventure, and peaceful trekking trails. Unlike more commercialized treks, it offers solitude, pristine landscapes, and the chance to truly connect with nature. Whether youâre a weekend trekker from Bangalore or a nature enthusiast exploring Karnataka, Kurinjal is a destination that leaves a lasting impression â from its misty forests to the breathtaking views atop the peak.
