If youâve ever dreamed of trekking through misty forests, verdant hills, and pristine meadows without the throngs of tourists, the Kurinjal Trek in Karnataka should be at the top of your list. Tucked away in the heart of Kudremukh National Park, this trail is a hidden gem, offering a perfect blend of adventure, serenity, and natural beauty. My journey here was nothing short of magical â from winding forest paths to panoramic summit views â and I want to take you along on this experience.
Getting to Kurinjal is part of the adventure. The trek officially begins near Balegal village, which serves as the entry point to Kudremukh National Park.
Traveling from Bangalore, the drive is roughly 280â300 km and takes about 7â8 hours. I left early in the morning to enjoy the scenic route through Hassan and Kalasa. The roads twist along rivers and coffee plantations, and tiny villages appear like little stories unfolding in real-time.
If you prefer public transport, buses from Bangalore to Kalasa run frequently. From Kalasa, local taxis or jeeps will take you to Balegal. For those flying or taking a train, Mangalore is the nearest major hub, around 110 km from the trekâs starting point.
Once you reach Balegal, youâll need to get a forest department permit. Hiring a local guide is mandatory, but I found it to be one of the highlights of the trek â their knowledge of the trails, flora, fauna, and local tales adds an invaluable layer to the journey.
Kurinjal is captivating all year round, but the experience changes with the seasons.
I personally trekked in late October, just after the monsoon, and it was perfect â lush greenery, flowing streams, and the occasional mist drifting through the hills created a dreamlike atmosphere.
The Kurinjal Trek spans around 7â8 km one way and is moderately challenging, making it suitable for beginners with a bit of stamina and experienced trekkers seeking a serene trail.
We started early in the morning, the forest alive with birdsong and the soft rustling of leaves. The first part of the trail is dense shola forest, and the air is rich with the scent of damp earth and pine. I couldnât help pausing every few steps, just to take in the sunlight filtering through the canopy and the occasional call of a hornbill or woodpecker.
About halfway through, the forest opens up into expansive grasslands, rolling endlessly over the hills. The wind here was invigorating, carrying the aroma of wildflowers and fresh grass. As we ascended the final ridge, the vistas opened up to reveal Kudremukh peaks in the distance, surrounded by lush valleys and cascading streams. Standing there, sipping chai from my flask, I realized that every challenging step was worth it.
Kurinjal is not just a trek â itâs a gateway to exploring the surrounding region.
A popular itinerary is a 2-day trip: Day 1 â trek to Kurinjal and camp at the ridge or forest edge; Day 2 â descend and explore Hanuman Gundi Falls or Kalasa before heading back. For a more relaxed schedule, you can stretch it to 3 days to include a visit to Kudremukh Peak.
Hereâs what I learned during my trek, which can help make your experience smooth and enjoyable:
The most important advice I can give is to respect nature. Donât litter, avoid loud music, and let the forest remain as pristine as you found it.
Kurinjal isnât just a trek; itâs an experience of solitude, discovery, and connection with nature. Unlike more commercialized trails, it offers uninterrupted walks through forests, sweeping meadows, and ridges with breathtaking views. I loved pausing on the ridge with a cup of chai, watching clouds drift over the valleys, feeling both exhilarated and calm.
Whether youâre a beginner eager to explore Karnatakaâs hidden gems or a seasoned trekker looking for peace away from the crowds, Kurinjal Trek is a journey you wonât forget. Itâs challenging enough to give you a sense of accomplishment yet peaceful enough to let you connect with nature.
So pack your bags, lace up your trekking shoes, and set out for a trail that promises adventure, serenity, and memories that last a lifetime.
