Some journeys are about conquering heights, while others are about discovering peace hidden in the folds of nature. My trek to Kurinjal Peak, nestled within the Kudremukh National Park in Karnataka, was a blend of both. It wasnât just another weekend trekâit felt like stepping into a lush green painting where every trail whispered stories of the wild.
If youâre looking for an offbeat trek thatâs less crowded yet breathtakingly beautiful, the Kurinjal Trek is an adventure you should not miss.
The first thing I noticed about Kurinjal is how untouched it feels. Unlike some popular treks where youâre never really alone, here you get the raw wilderness of the Western Ghats. The trail takes you through dense forests, rolling grasslands, and misty ridges before opening up to panoramic views of valleys and peaks.
At an altitude of 5,751 ft (1,753 m), Kurinjal is not the tallest peak in Karnataka, but the experience it offers is truly unique. The trek gives you glimpses of wild streams, exotic birds, and the chance to witness the untouched biodiversity that Kudremukh is famous for.
Reaching the base is an adventure in itself. The trek starts inside the Kudremukh National Park, and you need prior permission from the forest department.
The journey through winding ghats, pepper plantations, and waterfalls set the mood even before I began trekking.
After collecting my permit and briefing from the forest guards, I started the trek early morning. The first stretch led me into a canopy of thick forests, where sunlight barely touched the ground. The air was filled with the smell of wet earth and the sound of cicadas.
As I climbed higher, the forest gave way to open grasslands. The view was nothing short of magicalâthe rolling green hills looked endless, with mist floating lazily across their slopes.
The final stretch to the peak was steep and challenging, but every step felt rewarding. Standing at the summit, I was greeted with sweeping views of the Western Ghats, valleys cloaked in mist, and the silence of untouched wilderness. In that moment, I realized Kurinjal isnât about just reaching the topâitâs about the journey itself.
Timing can transform your trekking experience, and for Kurinjal, the seasons play a huge role:
I went post-monsoon, and the entire valley looked like a green carpet.
One of the perks of trekking in Kudremukh is the abundance of nearby attractions you can club with your trip:
Adding a day or two to your itinerary gives you a wholesome mix of trekking, culture, and relaxation.
A trek in a protected forest area comes with certain rules. Here are my personal tips to make your journey smooth:
When I look back, the Kurinjal Trek wasnât just about ticking off another trailâit was about reconnecting with raw nature. Unlike commercial treks, Kurinjal offers a sense of solitude. The untouched greenery, the thrill of walking through a national park, and the rewarding summit views make it a soulful journey.
If youâre someone who loves quiet trails, lush forests, and authentic trekking experiences away from the crowds, the Kurinjal Trek in Kudremukh will win your heart.
