Some treks surprise you not with their difficulty, but with their sheer beauty and solitude. The Kurinjal peak Trek, tucked inside Kudremukh National Park in Karnataka, is exactly that. Unlike the more popular Kudremukh peak trek, Kurinjal is relatively less crowded but offers equally stunning views of the Western Ghats. With dense forests, rolling grasslands, mist-covered valleys, and a summit that feels like the edge of the world, Kurinjal is one of those treks that quietly steals your heart.
When I first set out for Kurinjal, I had little idea of what awaited me. But step by step, the trail unfolded like a storyâsometimes calm, sometimes challenging, but always rewarding.
At about 1,095 meters, Kurinjal may not be the tallest peak in Karnataka, but it stands proudly as part of the Kudremukh National Park in Chikmagalur district. This national park is known for its rich biodiversityâyouâll walk past thick rainforests alive with bird calls, bamboo groves, streams trickling across the path, and open meadows that suddenly give way to sweeping views.
What I loved most was the serenity. Unlike crowded trekking trails, Kurinjal has a raw, untouched charm. You can walk for hours hearing nothing but the crunch of leaves underfoot and the distant sound of a waterfall. And when the mist parts, the sight of endless green valleys makes you pause in pure wonder.
The Kurinjal trek usually starts from the Kurinjal Base Camp inside Kudremukh National Park. The total distance is about 10 km (5 km one way), which makes it a moderate trekâchallenging in parts, but manageable even for beginners with decent fitness.
The first stretch takes you deep into a dense forest, where the sunlight filters in patches through tall trees. The trail feels aliveâgiant ferns line the path, butterflies dance around, and if youâre lucky, you might spot deer or langurs in the distance. After about an hour, the forest begins to thin out, and the landscape changes dramatically.
Suddenly, you find yourself walking across vast grasslands. The climb becomes steeper here, but the open skies and panoramic views are more than enough motivation. As I pushed myself uphill, the cool mountain breeze made the effort easier. By the time I reached the summit, clouds were swirling around me, and the entire Kudremukh range stretched out like an emerald carpet. Standing there, I felt both tiny and infinite at the same time.
The best time for Kurinjal Trek is from October to March, when the weather is cool, skies are relatively clear, and the forest is lush from the monsoon rains. Post-monsoon months are particularly beautifulâthe grasslands turn a rich green, and the streams flow gently, adding music to your walk.
Summer (April to May) can get uncomfortably hot, especially in the open meadows, while monsoon (June to September) transforms the trail into a slippery, leech-infested challenge. That said, if you love misty treks and donât mind the extra hurdles, the monsoon can be a magical time too.
Kurinjal lies inside Kudremukh National Park in Chikmagalur district. The nearest major town is Karkala, about 22 km away.
From Bangalore, the distance is roughly 330 km, and it takes 7â8 hours by road. Overnight buses from Bangalore to Kalasa or Kudremukh are convenient, after which you can hire a jeep or taxi to the park entrance.
The nearest railway station is Mangalore (100 km away), and the nearest airport is Mangalore International Airport (110 km). Both are well connected to major cities, making Kurinjal accessible even if youâre not starting from Bangalore.
Here are a few things I learned on my Kurinjal trek that you might find helpful:
If youâre coming from Bangalore, hereâs a simple 2-night, 3-day plan:
Kurinjal is one of those treks that gives you a rich experience without burning a hole in your pocket. Entry permits cost around â¹500 per person (this may vary). Homestays in the region cost â¹900ââ¹1,500 per night including meals. Add transportation (bus or car rental), and you can comfortably do the entire trip within â¹4,500ââ¹6,500 per person for 3 days.
As for safety, Kurinjal is beginner-friendly but moderately challenging in parts. Trek in a group, avoid wandering off marked paths, and carry basic first-aid. Since the trek goes through a protected reserve, always listen to the forest guidesâthey know the terrain best.
The Kurinjal Trek may not have the fame of Kudremukh peak or the thrill of high-altitude Himalayan trails, but it has something equally preciousâpeace. Itâs the kind of trek where you can walk without crowds, breathe in clean mountain air, and lose yourself in natureâs rhythm.
For me, Kurinjal was more than just a weekend escapeâit was a reminder of how much beauty lies hidden in corners we often overlook. If youâre someone who loves treks that are scenic, soulful, and off the beaten path, Kurinjal will not disappoint.
So the next time youâre in Karnataka and craving an authentic trekking experience, head to Kudremukh National Park. The forests of Kurinjal are waiting to share their secrets with you.
