Most people come to Manali for its charming blend of nature, adventure, and culture. Itâs the land of river rafting, snow trekking, and cozy wooden cottages. But not many know that Manali also offers the rare chance to take to the skiesâliterallyâin a hot air balloon.
The idea first came to me while sipping coffee at a riverside café in Old Manali. A fellow traveler mentioned it in passing, and my curiosity was instantly piqued. By evening, I had already booked my ride for the next morning.
The next day, I woke up before dawn and headed towards Solang Valley, one of the main hot air ballooning spots in Manali. As the sun began to rise, casting a golden glow over the snow-clad mountains, I saw the massive balloon slowly inflateâbright, colorful, and larger than life.
When we finally took off, the ground gently slipped away, and I was left speechless. Below me were tiny wooden homes, winding mountain roads, and the silver thread of the Beas River. Ahead, the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges rose dramatically into the morning sky.
Though the balloon was tethered (anchored to the ground), the experience was real and raw. The silence up there was unlike anything elseâno horns, no chatter, just the wind and the hiss of the flame. It lasted around 8 minutes, but those few minutes offered a lifetimeâs worth of peace.
Choosing the right time makes all the difference. Hereâs what I found:
Book your ride early in the morningâaround 6:30 to 7:30 AMâas the winds are calmer and the light is perfect for pictures.
There are mainly two locations for hot air ballooning in the Manali region:
You can easily reach both locations by private cab, rented bike, or through your tour operatorâs pickup service. Roads are well maintained, and travel time is under 30 minutes from central Manali.
One thing I absolutely loved? The experience was affordable! Compared to ballooning in places like Jaipur or international destinations, Manali offers excellent value.
Local Tip: If you're visiting in the off-season or on weekdays, you can try negotiating for a better dealâespecially if you're in a group.
Safety is a priority with most reputed operators. Make sure to check if the company is certified and ask about weather cancellation policies.
Here are a few practical pointers that helped me make the most of my ride:
If you're planning a short trip, hereâs how you can fit the hot air balloon experience into your schedule:
Whether youâre traveling solo, as a couple, or with family, this ride adds a memorable touch to your Himachal escape.
As the balloon descended and my feet touched the ground again, I felt like Iâd just woken up from a beautiful dream. That short flight above Manali wasnât just about seeing the mountainsâit was about feeling them, connecting with them in a way I never had before.
So, if you're planning a trip to Himachal and looking for something truly specialâgo beyond the usual. Take to the skies.
