Mardi Himal Trek is one of those peaceful routes in the Annapurna region that quietly takes your breath away not with crowds, but with its simplicity and raw mountain beauty. It is often seen as an easy alternative to other treks like ABC or Annapurna Circuit. But as someone who has guided on this trail more than a few times, I will tell you this: Mardi might look soft, but it has its own tricks.
Let me walk you through what the Mardi Himal Trek is really like from the scenic parts to the surprises that can slow you down.
Most people start the trek from Kande, which is about an hour drive from Pokhara. From there, the route takes you through Australian Camp, Forest Camp, Low Camp, High Camp, and finally Mardi Base Camp, which sits at around 4,500 meters. After that, you usually return the same way or come down via Siding village.
The total trek takes about 5 to 7 days depending on your pace. It is short, but do not think it is easy just because it does not take long.
The trail gives you a perfect mix of forest walks, ridge lines, and close-up views of Machapuchare (the famous fishtail peak) and Annapurna South. The views come in fast and stay with you. You walk through rhododendron forests, tiny villages, and sometimes you would not see another group for hours.
This silence is something many trekkers love. No noisy crowds, no packed lodges, just the sound of your boots and birds. It is peaceful, yes, but peace can sometimes be tricky too.
Now lets talk about the other side. Mardi Himal is a quieter trail, but it is not a smooth walk in the park. Here is what can make it tough:
From the very first day, you will notice how steep some sections are. Especially the climb from Forest Camp to High Camp it is a full uphill push with few flat stretches. It can wear you down if you are not used to walking uphill for hours.
Unlike the Annapurna Circuit, where the altitude increases slowly, Mardi goes up quickly. You go from around 1,800 meters to 4,500 meters in just a few days. This quick gain can give people headaches, dizziness, or fatigue. If you have never trekked above 3,000 meters before, take it slow.
The lodges on this route are much more basic compared to the ones in ABC or Everest Region. Some places do not have attached bathrooms. Electricity might be limited, and the rooms get cold fast at night. You will be eating mostly Dal Bhat, noodles, and soups.
So if you are expecting luxury or variety, adjust your expectations early. It is comfortable enough for adventure, but it is not built for tourists who want all the extras.
Once you hit High Camp, the temperature drops. And since the trail walks along a ridge, the wind can hit hard. Many people do not pack enough warm layers, thinking it is a short trek. But the wind at 4,000+ meters does not care how many days you have walked.
Pack smart thermal layers, windproof jackets, gloves, and a good sleeping bag are musts.
If you go in winter (December to February), expect snow near Base Camp. Trails can get slippery and icy. During monsoon (June to August), the leeches in the lower forests can get wild. Also, visibility drops, so you might miss the mountain views completely.
One nice thing about this route is the mix of Gurung and Magar villages. You will see simple stone houses, prayer flags, and locals farming or carrying heavy loads up steep trails. Unlike big trekking routes, people here are less used to seeing dozens of tourists every day. So the smiles feel more real.
Ask for stories, try their homemade pickles or tea, and do not rush through the villages.
Mardi Himal Trek is one of those quiet adventures that gives you big views without the big crowd. But it is not for people who expect everything to go smooth and easy. The trail will test your legs, the altitude will test your lungs, and the cold will test your packing.
Still, if you are ready for a challenge, and you want to see the Annapurna range from a fresh angle, this trail will make you feel like you earned every view.
