If youâre searching for a trek that combines breathtaking views, peaceful forests, and that raw Western Ghats charm, the Netravati Trek should be on your list. Located in the Chikmagalur district of Karnataka, this trail is part of the stunning Kudremukh range â yet it remains far less crowded than its famous neighbours.
The trek gets its name from the Netravati River, which originates from these mountains. As you climb higher, youâll walk through misty grasslands, cross flowing streams, and watch the sun rise over endless green valleys. Itâs one of those experiences that make you feel small yet deeply connected to nature.
I remember my first glimpse of the Netravati Valley from the ridge. Clouds drifted across the slopes, and the sound of the wind filled the air. It wasnât just another trek â it was a quiet journey into one of Karnatakaâs last untouched wildernesses.
The Netravati Trek begins near Samse village, about 15 km from Kalasa and 90 km from Chikmagalur. The nearest major city is Mangalore, around 130 km away.If youâre travelling from Bangalore, you can take an overnight bus or drive down to Kalasa (roughly 330 km away). The route via Hassan and Mudigere is scenic, filled with coffee estates and winding ghats. From Kalasa, local jeeps can take you to the forest check-post where the trek begins.
Youâll need to register with the Karnataka Forest Department at the starting point since Netravati Peak lies within a protected forest area. Entry is allowed only with official permission, and a local guide is mandatory â not just for safety but to make sure you donât miss the hidden gems along the way.
The Netravati Peak trek is roughly 12â14 km (one way) and takes about 5â6 hours to reach the summit. Itâs a moderate-level trek â not too tough, but it demands a decent level of fitness, especially in the monsoon season when trails get slippery.
The trek begins with a gentle climb through dense shola forests, where the air smells of wet earth and coffee flowers. Sunlight barely filters through the thick canopy, and you can hear the rustling of leaves and distant bird calls. After the forest section, the trail opens into wide grasslands â rolling green hills that stretch endlessly in every direction.
Youâll cross small streams of crystal-clear water, perfect for refilling your bottle. As you go higher, mist covers the path, and sometimes you can see waterfalls cascading down distant ridges. The last stretch to the summit is steeper, but when you reach the top, the view is absolutely worth every step.
From the Netravati Peak, you can see the majestic Kudremukh range, the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, and on a clear day, even the Arabian Sea far away on the horizon. The feeling of standing above the clouds, with the wind in your face, is pure magic.
The best time to trek Netravati is between October and February. The post-monsoon season brings lush greenery, mild weather, and clear skies â ideal for trekking and photography. If you want to experience the forest at its most vibrant, try visiting just after the monsoon (SeptemberâOctober). The streams are still full, and the hills look freshly washed and alive. However, during peak monsoon (JuneâAugust), the trek is closed to visitors due to heavy rains and slippery trails. Summer months (MarchâMay) are comparatively dry and hot, but mornings and evenings remain cool.
The region around Netravati is full of natural beauty and small hill-town charm. Once you finish your trek, itâs worth exploring a few nearby places:
Day 1:
Reach Kalasa by early morning and freshen up at a local homestay. After breakfast, drive to the forest check-post near Samse and start the trek by 8 AM. Walk through forest and grassland stretches, stop for lunch midway, and reach the Netravati Peak by afternoon. Spend time soaking in the views and head back to the base by evening. Stay overnight at a nearby homestay or camp under the stars if your guide allows.
Day 2:
Explore nearby attractions like Horanadu Temple or Kudremukh National Park before heading back. You can also visit a local coffee estate and learn about how coffee is grown and roasted â itâs a delightful experience unique to Chikmagalur.
The Netravati Trek is budget-friendly. If youâre travelling from Bangalore, expect to spend around â¹3,000ââ¹5,000 per person for a 2-day trip, including transport, accommodation, food, and guide charges. If you join a group trek, it might cost even less.
Wear comfortable trekking shoes with good grip, and carry light layers since the weather can change quickly. A rain jacket, extra socks, water bottle, torch, and snacks are essential. Donât forget insect repellent and sunscreen.
Since youâll be inside a forest area, respect local rules. Avoid plastic, donât play loud music, and stay with your group at all times. Leeches are common during monsoon months, so carry salt or a small packet of turmeric powder to handle them easily.
Most importantly, keep an eye on weather updates before you go. Heavy rain can make certain sections of the trail dangerous.
The Netravati Trek is one of those rare trails that still feels untouched and pure. Itâs not overly commercialized, which means you get to experience nature at its best â calm, wild, and beautiful. The blend of misty mountains, river crossings, and panoramic viewpoints makes it a complete Western Ghats adventure.
Unlike crowded destinations, Netravati offers a kind of peace thatâs hard to find elsewhere. You hear birds more than people, streams more than engines, and the silence of the forest speaks louder than anything else.
Whether youâre a seasoned trekker or someone just starting out, this trail gives you everything â adventure, solitude, and soul-soothing beauty. So pack your backpack, lace up your shoes, and get ready to meet one of Karnatakaâs best-kept secrets â the Netravati Peak Trek.
