When I first thought of Manali, images of snow-capped peaks, apple orchards, and bustling markets came to mind. But never did I imagine myself floating gently above the valley in a hot air balloon. Yet, thatâs exactly what I didâand it turned out to be one of the most surreal travel experiences of my life. If youâre curious about what itâs like, let me walk you through every detail so you can plan your own adventure.
Adventure activities in Manali are plentyâparagliding, river rafting, skiingâbut hot air ballooning felt completely different. The moment I stepped into the basket and the balloon began to rise, the noise of the town faded away. Suddenly, I was gliding peacefully above the green valleys, the Beas River sparkling below me, and the mighty Pir Panjal range standing tall in the distance.
What makes hot air ballooning in Manali special is its rhythm. Unlike adrenaline-charged sports, this one lets you breathe in the scenery, notice the little details, and simply be present in the moment.
Since balloon rides are heavily weather-dependent, timing your trip is key.
No matter the season, early mornings are the golden hours for ballooning. The soft light and calm winds make it magical.
Getting to Manali is fairly simple. I boarded an overnight bus from Delhi that dropped me at Mall Road the next morning. Another option is to fly into Bhuntar Airport, which is around 50 km away, and then take a taxi to Manali.
The hot air balloon rides typically take place in Dobhi, near Kullu Valley. The site is about 30â40 minutes from Manali town, surrounded by open fields and mountains. Watching the giant balloons being inflated against the sunrise is a memory Iâll never forgetâit felt like the day itself was waking up with us.
The ascent was surprisingly smooth. There was no jerky movementâjust a gentle lift, like being carried by the morning breeze. Below me, I could see clusters of pine forests, winding mountain roads, and far-off villages dotted with tiny houses.
The higher we went, the quieter it became. Apart from the occasional roar of the flame, there was only silence and breathtaking views. Itâs hard to explain the feelingâitâs not adrenaline, itâs awe. At that height, I felt both small and infinite at the same time.
The ride lasted around 8â10 minutes, but those few moments gave me more peace and joy than hours of trekking or driving ever could.
Hot air ballooning is definitely a premium activity, but itâs worth every penny if youâre looking for a once-in-a-lifetime memory. Prices usually range between â¹2,500 to â¹3,500 per person.
Hereâs what Iâd recommend keeping in mind:
Of course, a hot air balloon ride isnât the only highlight of Manali. If youâre planning a longer stay, here are a few things that made my trip complete:
Pairing a hot air balloon ride with these activities makes for a perfectly balanced itinerary of thrill and relaxation.
Looking back, my hot air balloon ride in Manali wasnât just about floating above the valley. It was about slowing down, breathing deeply, and seeing the Himalayas in a new light. The silence, the views, and the gentle motion of the balloon all combined into something magicalâsomething that photos canât capture and words can only attempt to describe.
If youâre heading to Manali, donât miss this. Whether youâre traveling solo, with friends, or with a partner, the experience has a way of making time stand still. And trust me, when youâre up there, with the mountains stretching endlessly around you, youâll understand why some adventures are truly worth every effort. So go aheadâbook that ride, rise with the morning sun, and let Manali reveal itself from above. It will stay with you forever.
