Tadiandamol Trek: Conquering the Highest Peak in Coorg

When people think of Coorg, the first things that come to mind are coffee plantations, misty hills, and cozy homestays. But tucked within these hills lies a true gem for adventure seekers — the Tadiandamol Trek. Standing at about 1,748 meters, Tadiandamol is the highest peak in Coorg (Kodagu) and the third highest in Karnataka. It’s not just about the climb; it’s about the sweeping grasslands, the peaceful silence of the forests, and the breathtaking views that make you feel on top of the world.

I did this trek a while back, and it still remains one of my favorites in the Western Ghats. Here’s a complete guide to help you plan your own Tadiandamol adventure.

Why Tadiandamol Should Be on Your List

Unlike some treks that feel grueling, Tadiandamol strikes a perfect balance. It’s manageable for beginners yet rewarding enough for seasoned trekkers. The trail offers everything — shaded forest paths, streams to cross, wide open meadows, and a summit with 360-degree views of rolling green hills.

What I loved most was the peaceful vibe. Unlike crowded treks, Tadiandamol still retains a calm, laid-back charm. You’ll often find yourself walking with only the sound of birds and the rustling of grass around you.

How to Reach Tadiandamol

The trek starts near Nalknad Palace, a small historic site that itself is worth a short visit. The palace was once a hideout for Kodava kings and adds a cultural touch to the journey.

  • From Bangalore (around 270 km): You can take an overnight bus to Virajpet and then a taxi/auto to the base.
  • From Mysore (around 120 km): A 3–4 hour drive via Hunsur.
  • From Madikeri (40 km): Easily reachable by local taxis or bikes.

If you’re driving, you can park near Nalknad Palace and start your trek from there.

Best Time to Trek Tadiandamol

The experience changes with the seasons:

  • Monsoon (June–September): The hills turn lush green, with clouds drifting in and out. But the trail gets slippery, and leeches are common.
  • Post-Monsoon (October–February): The best time. Clear skies, pleasant weather, and stunning views. Perfect for photography and camping.
  • Summer (March–May): The grasslands dry up, and it can get hot during the climb. Early morning treks are manageable.

Personally, I’d recommend October to December — the greenery lingers from the rains, and the skies are perfect for panoramic views.

The Trekking Experience

The trail is about 8 km one way and takes around 3–4 hours to reach the peak. The first stretch is through dense forest, where the air feels cool and earthy. Once you emerge from the canopy, the scenery changes to wide grasslands and rolling hills — this was my favorite part, as the views just kept getting better with every step.

The final stretch is steeper and slightly rocky, but it’s not too tough if you pace yourself. Once at the summit, the view is breathtaking — endless layers of the Western Ghats fading into the horizon, often with clouds drifting right past you. Sitting there with the cool wind in your face feels like a reward worth every step.

Local Tips for a Smooth Trek

From my own experience and other trekkers’ advice:

  • Start Early: Begin the trek by 7–8 AM to enjoy the views and return before dark.
  • Carry Enough Water: There are very few water sources on the trail.
  • Wear Good Shoes: The last section is rocky and slippery in monsoon.
  • Pack Light: Carry snacks, a poncho, and sunscreen.
  • Stay Options: Homestays near Kakkabe or Virajpet are the best. Many offer food and guidance to the base point.

Budgeting Your Trip

Tadiandamol is easy on the pocket:

  • Bangalore to Virajpet bus: ₹600–800
  • Local transport to Nalknad Palace: ₹300–500 (shared)
  • Homestays near the base: ₹800–1500 per night (with food)
  • Meals: ₹200–300 per person

A weekend trek with travel, stay, and food can cost around ₹2500–₹4000 per person.

Nearby Attractions to Explore

If you have extra time in Coorg, pair your trek with these:

  • Chelavara Falls: A scenic waterfall not too far from the trek base.
  • Nalknad Palace: Right at the starting point — worth a quick look.
  • Abbey Falls & Raja’s Seat (Madikeri): Classic Coorg attractions.
  • Coffee Plantation Tours: Get a taste of Coorg’s coffee culture.

Final Thoughts

The Tadiandamol Trek is more than just climbing Coorg’s highest peak — it’s a refreshing escape into nature’s simplicity. It’s about walking through quiet forests, climbing into open skies, and sitting on top of a hill where the world feels endless.

If you’re planning a Coorg trip and want to balance relaxation with a dash of adventure, Tadiandamol is a perfect choice. It’s beginner-friendly, budget-friendly, and incredibly rewarding — the kind of trek that leaves you with memories (and photos) you’ll cherish for years.
