Tadiandamol Trek: My Journey to the Highest Peak of Coorg

When I first heard about the Tadiandamol Trek, I was instantly intrigued. Known as the highest peak in Coorg and the second-highest in Karnataka, it promised everything I love about trekking—lush forests, misty hills, panoramic views, and a touch of adventure.

Situated in the Western Ghats at an altitude of 1,748 meters, Tadiandamol is the perfect escape for anyone looking to combine nature, serenity, and a dash of physical challenge. I recently completed this trek, and in this blog, I’ll share my experience along with practical tips on how you can plan your own journey.

Why Tadiandamol is Special

What makes Tadiandamol unique is the way it blends Coorg’s charm with trekking thrills. Unlike hardcore Himalayan treks, it’s accessible even to beginners, yet the views are nothing short of magical.

The trail takes you through dense shola forests, wide grasslands, and winding paths covered in mist. At the summit, you’re rewarded with a 360-degree view of rolling hills, valleys, and endless greenery. On a clear day, you can even spot the Arabian Sea in the far distance.

What struck me most was the silence—away from city chaos, the only sounds were of rustling leaves, birds, and the occasional stream trickling by. It felt like nature was letting me breathe again.

Best Time to Do the Tadiandamol Trek

The beauty of this trek changes with the seasons, and your experience depends on when you go.

  • Winter (October to February): The best time to trek. Cool weather, clear skies, and stunning views from the summit.
  • Monsoon (June to September): The hills come alive in rich green, and waterfalls are at their best. However, the trail can get slippery, and leeches are common.
  • Summer (March to May): Warmer, but still manageable thanks to the shade of forests.

I went in November, and the crisp air combined with misty hills made the trek absolutely perfect.

How to Reach Tadiandamol

Getting there is part of the adventure. The trek starts from Kakkabe village in Coorg.

  • From Bangalore (280 km): The most popular route is to drive or take a bus to Virajpet (around 6–7 hours), then a cab to Kakkabe.
  • From Mangalore (135 km): A 4–5 hour drive via Madikeri brings you to the base.
  • By Train: Mysore (120 km) is the nearest railway station. From there, you can take a cab or bus to Coorg.

Pro tip: If you love road trips, the Bangalore–Coorg route is scenic and filled with plenty of pit stops for coffee and photography.

My Trek Experience: Trail Highlights

The Tadiandamol trek is about 8 km one way and takes 4–5 hours depending on your pace. Here’s how my experience unfolded:

  • The Base: The trek begins near the Nalknad Palace, a historic 18th-century palace built by the Kodava kings. It’s worth exploring before you start your hike.
  • Into the Forests: The trail starts gently, leading you into dense shola forests. The cool shade and sounds of chirping birds set the mood for the adventure.
  • Open Grasslands: After about 2 km, the trail opens into vast rolling grasslands. This stretch was my favourite—green hills as far as the eye could see, with mist floating like soft blankets.
  • Final Ascent: The last stretch gets steeper, testing your stamina a little. But as you push forward, the summit slowly comes into view.
  • The Summit: Standing at 1,748 meters, the views are simply breathtaking. A sea of hills stretched endlessly, and the wind carried the scent of fresh grass and earth. I sat there for a while, just soaking it all in.

Coming down was quicker, but I carried a deep sense of calm with me all the way back.

Safety, Essentials, and Local Tips

  • Fitness: It’s a moderately easy trek, so beginners can do it with a bit of preparation (regular walking or jogging helps).
  • Clothing: Wear comfortable trekking clothes, sturdy shoes, and carry a light jacket as the summit can get windy.
  • Pack Light: Essentials include water, snacks, sunscreen, cap, and a raincoat if you’re trekking in monsoon.
  • Permits: A small entry fee is collected by the forest department at the base. Always check local guidelines before you go.
  • Leeches in Monsoon: Salt or antiseptic cream helps if you’re trekking during rains.
  • Stay Options: Homestays around Kakkabe are a great choice for an authentic Coorg experience.

The locals are friendly and often share stories about the region’s history and culture—don’t miss the chance to interact.

Budgeting for the Trek

The Tadiandamol trek is one of the most budget-friendly adventures you can take.

  • Travel Costs: From Bangalore, a round trip by bus and cab would cost around ₹1,500–₹2,000 per person. Driving with friends reduces costs further.
  • Accommodation: Homestays in Kakkabe start from ₹800–₹1,500 per night with meals included.
  • Miscellaneous: Permits, snacks, and local transport will add another ₹500–₹1,000.

Final Thoughts: Why Tadiandamol Should Be on Your List

The Tadiandamol Trek is more than just reaching a summit—it’s about soaking in the beauty of Coorg, feeling the calm of untouched nature, and challenging yourself just enough to feel accomplished.

For me, it was one of those treks that left me both humbled and recharged. Watching the sunrise over misty hills, walking through forests, and breathing in the fresh mountain air—it reminded me why I keep going back to the Western Ghats.

If you’re looking for a quick yet soulful escape from Bangalore or Mangalore, pack your bags and head to Coorg. Tadiandamol awaits with open arms, misty trails, and views you’ll never forget.
