Tadiandamol Trek – Conquering the Highest Peak of Coorg

There’s something about the Western Ghats that always calls me back—the misty mountains, the smell of wet earth, and the way every trail feels like a secret waiting to be discovered. This time, the trail led me to Tadiandamol Trek, the highest peak in Coorg and the third-highest in Karnataka. Standing tall at 1,748 meters, Tadiandamol is where adventure meets tranquility, making it a must-do for anyone looking to escape city life for a weekend.

Why Tadiandamol is a Trekker’s Paradise

Unlike many treks that demand extreme stamina, the Tadiandamol trek is friendly to both beginners and experienced trekkers. What makes it special is the journey itself—winding trails through shola forests, open grasslands stretching as far as you can see, and the occasional drizzle that turns the entire landscape into a dreamscape.

For me, the charm was in the contrast—one moment you’re in dense greenery where sunlight barely peeks through, and the next you’re standing on vast meadows with rolling hills unfolding before your eyes. By the time you reach the peak, the panoramic view of Coorg’s valleys and coffee estates will have you hooked.

Best Time to Visit Tadiandamol

Timing is everything when it comes to this trek. The best time to visit Tadiandamol is between October and February, when the weather is cool and visibility is good. The post-monsoon months drape the hills in lush green, and winter mornings here are nothing short of magical.

That said, trekking during the monsoon (June–September) is a whole new experience. The hills come alive with waterfalls, and the mist makes the trail feel mysterious, though it also makes the terrain slippery. Summer, on the other hand, can get warm and a little dry, so it’s not as enjoyable.

I did the trek in November, and it was perfect—blue skies, cool breeze, and greenery everywhere.

How to Reach Tadiandamol

Reaching Tadiandamol is fairly straightforward. The base point is Kakkabe village in Coorg.

  • From Bangalore: The distance is about 270 km, which takes roughly 6–7 hours by road. Most people opt for a road trip or take overnight buses to Virajpet, the nearest town.
  • By Train: The nearest railway station is Mysore (125 km away). From there, you can hire a cab or take a bus.
  • By Air: Mangalore Airport is about 165 km away, while Bangalore Airport is around 300 km.

From Virajpet, local taxis and jeeps are available to reach the starting point of the trek. Driving through Coorg’s winding coffee-scented roads itself feels like a teaser to the adventure ahead.

The Trek Experience – Step into the Wild

The Tadiandamol trek is around 7 km (one way) and takes about 3–4 hours to reach the peak, depending on your pace. The trail is moderately challenging but very rewarding.

The first stretch from the base is through coffee plantations, where the earthy aroma is enough to wake you up better than any cup of coffee. Soon after, you enter shola forests, with thick canopies overhead and a cool hush that makes you slow down just to take it all in.

Halfway through, the forest opens up into rolling grasslands, and this is where the magic begins. The hills stretch endlessly, and the clouds often descend so close that you feel like you can touch them. The last section is a bit steep and rocky, but once you’re at the peak, all the fatigue melts away. The 360-degree view of the Western Ghats from up there is simply breathtaking.

Nearby Attractions to Add to Your Trip

The beauty of the Tadiandamol trek is that it doesn’t exist in isolation. Coorg has plenty of gems nearby that you can add to your itinerary:

  • Nalknad Palace: Just 4 km from the base, this 18th-century palace built by Dodda Veerarajendra is worth a quick visit for history lovers.
  • Chelavara Falls: A scenic waterfall around 20 km away, perfect for a refreshing stop after your trek.
  • Abbey Falls & Madikeri Fort: Located a little further in Madikeri, they make for a good day trip.
  • Coffee Plantations: No trip to Coorg is complete without experiencing its coffee estates—many homestays arrange guided walks.

Practical Tips for a Safe and Smooth Trek

When it comes to Tadiandamol, preparation makes your experience more enjoyable. Here are some local tips I found useful:

  • Wear sturdy trekking shoes—the trail can get slippery, especially after rain.
  • Carry at least 2 liters of water and light snacks. There are no shops on the way up.
  • Start your trek early in the morning to avoid the afternoon sun and crowds.
  • Entry to the trek is free, but it’s good to register at the forest check-post.
  • For stay, choose cozy homestays in Kakkabe or Virajpet—they’re affordable (₹1,000–₹1,500 per night) and give you a taste of Coorg’s hospitality.
  • A weekend trip from Bangalore, including travel, food, and stay, can easily fit within ₹3,000–₹5,000.

Above all, respect the environment—don’t litter, and keep the trail clean for future trekkers.

Suggested 2-Day Itinerary from Bangalore

Here’s a simple plan if you’re heading to Tadiandamol from Bangalore:

Day 1:

  • Leave Bangalore by early morning or take an overnight bus to Virajpet.
  • Reach Coorg by noon, check into a homestay near Kakkabe.
  • Visit Nalknad Palace and relax in the evening with a plantation walk.

Day 2:

  • Start the trek early (around 6:30 am).
  • Reach the peak by mid-morning, spend some time soaking in the views.
  • Descend by afternoon, freshen up at your stay.
  • Return to Bangalore by evening.

Final Thoughts – Why Tadiandamol is Worth Every Step

The Tadiandamol trek isn’t just about climbing Coorg’s highest peak—it’s about immersing yourself in the Western Ghats’ beauty, where every step brings you closer to nature. It’s beginner-friendly yet rewarding, spiritual yet adventurous.

For me, Tadiandamol was more than a trek; it was a reminder of how small we are in front of nature’s grandeur, and how grounding it feels to walk through misty hills that have stood for centuries. If you’re looking for a quick getaway from Bangalore that combines adventure, peace, and a taste of Coorg’s culture, Tadiandamol should be at the top of your list. So, lace up your boots, pack your backpack, and let the hills of Coorg surprise you—one step at a time.
