Tadiandamol Trek – Walking Above the Clouds in Coorg’s Highest Peak

There’s something magical about Coorg—the coffee-scented air, rolling hills, and endless greenery. But on my recent trip, I wanted to go beyond cafés and plantations. I wanted the real Coorg experience, the kind you earn step by step. That’s how I found myself on the Tadiandamol Trek, standing atop the highest peak in the district, with clouds drifting at my feet.

Getting There – The Road to the Trailhead

Tadiandamol, at 1,748 meters, is the tallest peak in Coorg and the third highest in Karnataka. My journey began from Bangalore on a cool Friday night. I hopped on an overnight bus to Virajpet, the nearest town, arriving at dawn when the streets still smelled of fresh filter coffee.

From Virajpet, it’s about 20 km to the trek’s starting point near Kakkabe. You can hire a cab or auto-rickshaw. The road winds through coffee estates, spice plantations, and the occasional waterfall—setting the mood for the adventure ahead.

The Trekking Experience – Step by Step into the Wild

The Tadiandamol Trek is about 8 km one way and is considered moderately challenging. The trail starts gently, passing through lush shola forests, where the air feels cooler and the sunlight filters through a canopy of leaves.

As you walk, you’ll hear the constant hum of crickets, the chirping of Malabar whistling thrushes, and the distant trickle of streams. The path alternates between forest shade and open grasslands, where the view suddenly opens up to reveal endless green ridges stretching into the horizon.

Halfway up, we stopped for a quick snack near a stream, dipping our hands into the icy water before moving on. The final stretch is a steep climb over rocky patches. My legs were burning, but when I reached the summit, all the fatigue melted away—below me lay a sea of clouds, with the Western Ghats rolling endlessly into the distance.

Best Time to Visit Tadiandamol

  • October to February – Cool, dry weather, perfect for trekking and photography.
  • March to May – Warmer, but the hills turn golden.
  • June to September – Monsoon magic with lush greenery, but slippery trails and leeches require extra caution.

I went in January, and the weather was crisp—ideal for long treks without sweating buckets.

Nearby Attractions – More to Explore Around Tadiandamol

After the trek, you can explore some gems nearby:

  • Nalknad Palace – A small but historically significant palace built in the 18th century, just a short walk from the base.
  • Chelavara Falls – A gorgeous waterfall surrounded by dense forest.
  • Coffee Estate Tours – Experience Coorg’s famous coffee culture firsthand.

If you’re planning a weekend trip, you can easily combine the trek with a plantation stay for the complete Coorg experience.

Tips for a Smooth and Safe Trek

  • Start early—preferably by 7:00 am—to avoid trekking under the harsh afternoon sun.
  • Wear sturdy shoes; the trail can be slippery after rain.
  • Carry at least 2 liters of water per person.
  • Pack light snacks like energy bars or bananas.
  • Respect the environment—don’t litter and avoid loud music.

You don’t need a guide for the trek if you’re confident, but having one can enrich the experience with local stories and wildlife knowledge.

Why Tadiandamol is Worth Every Step

For me, the Tadiandamol Trek wasn’t just about reaching the summit—it was about the journey. The changing landscapes, the fresh mountain air, the occasional burst of birdsong—it all came together to create a sense of peace I hadn’t felt in a long time.

Standing at the peak, I realised why this trek is loved by beginners and seasoned hikers alike. It’s challenging enough to feel rewarding, yet accessible for anyone with a decent fitness level.

If you’ve been craving an escape from routine and want to see Coorg from its highest point, Tadiandamol is calling. Trust me, the clouds here don’t just float past—they stop and greet you.
