You also need high-quality sunglasses that wrap around your eyes to prevent snow blindness. Do not forget a strong sunscreen with at least SPF 50 and a lip balm with sun protection. Sunburn at 5,000 meters hurts much more than a sunburn at the beach.


Water and Health Essentials

Staying hydrated is the best way to prevent altitude sickness. You should drink four to five liters of water every day. Bring two reusable water bottles or a hydration bladder. Since you cannot buy plastic bottles in many parts of the park, you must use water purification tablets or a filter.

Pack a small medical kit with basic items. Include bandages, blister tape, and medicine for headaches or stomach issues. A small bottle of hand sanitizer is also very useful since warm water for washing is not always available.


Electronics and Power

Electricity is a luxury in the mountains. Most teahouses use solar power and will charge you a fee to plug in your phone. To save money and stay connected, bring a large power bank. It is also wise to keep your batteries inside your sleeping bag at night. The extreme cold drains battery life very quickly if they are left out. A reliable headlamp is a must-have for early morning climbs to the passes or finding your way to the bathroom at night.

Trekking for nearly three weeks is hard work. Sometimes a small treat can boost your mood when you are tired. Pack some of your favorite snacks like chocolate bars, dried fruit, or nuts. These give you a quick energy boost on the steep climbs. A small travel towel that dries quickly is also much better than a heavy cotton one. Finally, bring a book or a deck of cards to pass the time with your fellow trekkers in the evenings.
