Want an amazing Nepal trek without the crowds? The Tilicho Lake trek gives you breathtaking views, a clear blue lake, and a real sense of adventure. At 4,919 meters (16,138 feet), Tilicho is one of the highest lakes in the world.
I still remember my first glimpse of Tilicho Lake - a bright blue splash against gray mountains and white snow. The three-day side trip from the Annapurna Circuit was tough but so worth it!
The lake sits in a bowl of mountains, with the massive Tilicho Peak (7,134 meters) watching over it. The water is so blue it looks fake in photos - but it's real!
Most people start from Manang (3,519 meter
Go between October-November or March-April. During these months:
Winter visits (December-February) are possible but very cold, with temps dropping to -15ðC (5ðF) at night (Himalayan Weather Station data, 2024).
Day 1: Manang to Shree Kharka
A 4-5 hour walk through pine forests and open fields. The path climbs slowly, giving your body time to get used to the thin air.
Day 2: Shree Kharka to Tilicho Base Camp
This is the hardest day. You'll cross the famous "landslide area" - a steep slope of loose rocks where you need to watch every step. The base camp sits at 4,150 meters.
Day 3: Base Camp to Tilicho Lake and back
Start early! The climb takes 3-4 hours, but seeing the lake makes you forget how tired you are. Most people spend 1-2 hours at the lake before heading back down.
The Tilicho Lake trek isn't easy, but that's what makes it special. When you stand by that blue water, looking at mountains that touch the sky, you'll know why you came.
