Planning a city break in London, a Highland adventure in Scotland, or a business meeting in Manchester? If you're a citizen of the Netherlands, your travel to the UK has a new, mandatory step. The days of simply hopping on the Eurostar or a flight with just your passport are over.
The UK has introduced a new digital travel permit called the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), and it's now a UK eTA requirement for Netherlands Citizens.

Think of the UK ETA as a digital "permission slip" to travel. It is not a traditional visa, but it is mandatory. It's part of the UK's plan to digitize its borders, similar to the ESTA in the United States or the ETIAS in the EU (which you, as a Dutch citizen, won't need for Europe).
Starting in 2024, Dutch citizens (along with all other non-visa-national Europeans) must have an approved ETA before they travel. You will be denied boarding your flight, train, or ferry without one.
Yes. The ETA is required for:

The only main exception is for those who hold a separate UK visa (like a work or student visa) or who have residency in the UK (e.g., under the EU Settlement Scheme).
The good news is that the application is simple and doesn't require complex paperwork like bank statements or hotel bookings.
Based on the online UK ETA Requirement. you only need two key items:

You will also need access to a valid email address and a credit card to pay the application fee.
The entire process is done online with a UK ETA application:-

This is the most critical part of your planning. While the application for UK ETA advice says "up to 3 working days," applications often provide expedited options for travelers in a hurry.
Here are the typical processing options you may find:
Crucial Advice: Do not wait until the last minute. Apply for your ETA as soon as you book your travel, or at least a week before you go, to avoid stress and extra "rush" fees.
The most common reason for an ETA application to be delayed or rejected is a poor-quality photo. Your photo must be:

We will guide you, but if you upload a photo from your camera roll, make sure it meets these rules.
This is the best feature of the new system. The UK ETA is not a single-trip permit.
As shown in the application, the standard ETA is valid for 2 Years with Multiple Entries.
This means you can apply once and travel to the UK as many times as you want for the next two years, as long as your Dutch passport remains valid. If your passport expires, your ETA expires with it, and you must apply for a new one with your new passport.
This is a very important point that confuses many travelers UK ETA Validity.
You cannot "stack" visits. For example, you cannot stay for 5 months, hop over to Paris for a weekend, and come back for another 5 months. Doing so will raise serious questions at the border about whether you are genuinely visiting or trying to live in the UK, which could get you denied entry.

No. The rule is the same for any entry to the UK. Your ETA will be checked by airline or train staff in Amsterdam or Rotterdam (or ferry staff at Hoek van Holland) before you board. They will scan your passport to see the linked ETA. No ETA, no boarding.
For most Dutch travelers, the arrival process will be very smooth.
You will likely not even speak to a Border Force officer.
Yes. This is a critical point all travelers must understand. An ETA is a travel authorization, not a guarantee of entry.
A UK Border Force officer always has the final say. You can still be questioned, and if the officer believes you are not a genuine visitor (e.g., they suspect you plan to work illegally, have insufficient funds for your trip, or have given deceptive answers), you can be denied entry at the border.

If you are sent to a desk, be prepared to answer basic questions politely and honestly:
Absolutely not. The ETA covers business activities, not work.
Attempting to work on an ETA is a serious breach of immigration rules and will get you banned from the UK.
Yes. Every traveler, regardless of age, must have their own individual ETA. This includes infants and children. You will need to complete a separate application for each child, using their own passport.

You do not need an ETA if you are:
If you are a dual Dutch-UK citizen, you must enter the UK on your British passport to avoid needing an ETA.
This is a common fear. What if you mistyped your passport number or birth date?
This is why you must double-check every single detail before you click "pay."
A denial is rare for a typical Dutch tourist. It usually means you have a significant criminal history or have previously violated UK immigration rules.
If your ETA is denied, you cannot travel to the UK. You will receive an email explaining the reason and your next steps. This will usually mean you must apply for a formal UK Standard Visitor Visa, which is a much longer, more expensive, and more complex process.
That's it! Once you have your 2-year ETA, you're all set for your trips to the UK. Enjoy that weekend in London!
