Tucked away in the lap of the Garhwal Himalayas, Valley of Flowers is an enchanting haven for nature enthusiasts and trekkers alike. Popular for its scenic beauty, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to a wide range of plant and animal species thereby making it one of the most sought-after treks in India. If you are a newbie taking up your first trekking expedition, then Valley of Flowers Trek offers a perfect blend of challenge and reward.
A moderate-level trekking experience lies on The Valley of Flower Trek which passes through some picturesque landscapes in India. The trek starts from Govindghat, a small town located about 275 km from Rishikesh. From Govindghat, trekkers make their way to Ghangaria which doubles as the base camp for Valley of Flowers. Generally, the trek covers approximately 38km distance while at its highest point, it has an elevation gain of 3,658 meters.
The valley of flowers typically consists of lush carpets filled with different types of Alpine flowers including; Blue Poppy and Himalayan Bellflower among many others. Besides these, it houses other rare animals such as Asiatic black bear, snow leopard and blue sheep.
For starters, this is a good introduction to trekking for anyone who has never tried it before. Here are my reasons why.
When you are going to start on this amazing walk, you should have everything fixed. Here are some pointers to help you get prepared:
As much as beginners can try this trek, they must be physically fit. You need to begin doing light exercises such as walking or cycling and jogging months ahead before embarking on the trek so that you can enhance stamina and make your legs stronger.
To avoid suffering from altitude sickness acclimating yourself from high altitudes is a prime factor. Spend a day at Govindghat or Ghangaria before heading to the Valley of Flowers
You should make sure that you have entry permits required when visiting Valley of Flowers National Park which can be obtained at the entrance gate in Ghangaria.
You will start at Govindghat, where you can either hike or take a shared taxi to Pulna and shorten the walking by 3 km. The walk from Pulna to Ghangaria is about 9 km long and takes around 5-6 hours. This route is well-marked and follows through dense forests, waterfalls, and beautiful villages. Ghangaria is a small place with basic accommodations where you can spend the night.
Next morning, begin early for the Valley of Flowers so that you are done trekking before dark. It is a four-kilometre trail which takes roughly two hours between Ghangaria and the valley mouth. Upon entrance, one is met by an explosion of colours with flowers all over of many kinds lavishing upon this valley. You could use this day to roam about the valley appreciating its exotic beauty while capturing several memories with your camera or phone that has a camera in it. By evening go back to Ghangaria.
Those who want a little extra should not miss out on Hemkund Sahib situated at an elevation of 4,329 m approximately above sea level; it’s a Gurudwara (Sikh temple). As challenging as it may be, this six-kilometre steep way coming from Ghanghria up towards Hemkund Sahib proffers some breathtaking views carefully crafted by nature on snow-covered peaks touching sky limits and glaciers appearing like mirrors reflecting these mountain tops.[1]Return for the night in Gangariya after paying homage at Gurudwara.
On the last day go back to Govind ghat and travel with a shared taxi to Joshimath or Rishikesh, from where you can proceed on your journey or return home.
In Ghangaria accommodation facilities are basic with guesthouses and tents. A booking ahead should be made especially during peak seasons. There are few but enough food options that come in the form of simple vegetarian meals available from these local eateries. One also needs to carry some energy bars, dry fruits, and snacks for trekking purposes.
The Valley of Flowers trek offers an adventure that combines nature’s beauty, and cultural diversity as well as an unparalleled experience. This hike is gentle enough for anyone who wants to try trekking without being too taxing physically. Trekking across one of India's most magical vistas can be both safe and memorable provided one has made the right preparations psychologically too.
You are to put on your walking shoes, pack your bags and be prepared to explore the vibrant and magical Valley of Flowers. The hike is an opportunity for you to test your limits and make memories that will stay with you forever.
