Living in Bangalore has its perksâthe weather is always kind, the cafés are endless, and the city never sleeps. But letâs be honest: between traffic jams and work deadlines, sometimes the city feels like a pressure cooker. Thatâs when I pack a small bag and escape for a quick weekend getaway from Bangalore. And trust me, the beauty of this city is that within just a few hoursâ drive, you can find yourself in misty hills, ancient temples, serene lakes, or even wildlife sanctuaries.
Over the past few years, Iâve explored quite a few short trips from Bangalore. Each one has left me with stories, photographs, and memories I keep going back to. Let me walk you through some of my favorite getawaysâplaces you should definitely consider for your next weekend escape.
If thereâs one place I keep returning to, itâs Coorg, just about 260 km from Bangalore. Known for its endless coffee plantations, rolling hills, and waterfalls, Coorg is where I go when I want to slow down.
On my last trip, I stayed in a cozy homestay amidst coffee estates. Waking up to the aroma of fresh coffee and the sound of birds was the kind of therapy city life doesnât offer. Abbey Falls, Dubare Elephant Camp, and Rajaâs Seat are some must-visit spots. But honestly, the real charm lies in simply walking through the plantations and soaking in the silence.
Best time to visit: October to March for cool weather.
Budget tip: Homestays are more affordable than resorts and give you a true local experience.
Only 150 km away, Mysore is the easiest and one of the most fulfilling weekend getaways from Bangalore. Iâve lost count of how many times Iâve visited, but every time feels new.
The Mysore Palace glows like a jewel when lit up on Sunday eveningsâitâs a sight I could never get tired of. Chamundi Hills, Brindavan Gardens, and the buzzing Devaraja Market make Mysore a complete package. Plus, donât even get me started on Mysore Pakâit tastes way better here than anywhere else.
Best time to visit: Year-round, though October is special because of Dussehra celebrations.
Nearby attraction: If you have extra time, Srirangapatna (Tipu Sultanâs legacy) is just 20 km away.
Around 245 km from Bangalore, Chikmagalur is another gem in the Western Ghats. While Coorg is more popular, Chikmagalur feels quieter and less crowded. I remember trekking to Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka, and being rewarded with breathtaking views above the clouds.
Apart from treks, coffee plantations here are equally magical. If youâre into road trips, the drive itselfâwith curvy ghats and green landscapesâfeels like half the adventure.
Best time to visit: September to March.
Travel tip: Carry light woolensâmornings and evenings can get surprisingly chilly.
If you want your weekend to be about spotting elephants, tigers, or even the elusive black panther, head to Kabini, about 210 km from Bangalore. The Kabini River runs through this region, and the backwaters make it look like something out of a painting.
I once stayed in a riverside eco-resort here, and the highlight of my trip was an early morning safari in Nagarhole National Park. Watching herds of elephants cross the river with the rising sun in the backgroundâit felt like a scene straight out of National Geographic.
Best time to visit: October to May for safaris.
Budgeting: Safaris can be slightly expensive, but theyâre worth every penny.
Not all getaways have to be about greenery; sometimes history calls. Hampi, about 350 km from Bangalore, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that takes you back to the glorious Vijayanagara Empire.
The first time I visited, I spent hours just wandering among the ruinsâthe stone chariots, temples, and markets still whisper stories of a bygone era. What adds charm to Hampi is the Tungabhadra River, boulder-strewn landscapes, and the laid-back vibe of Virupapur Gaddi (popularly called âHippie Islandâ).
Best time to visit: October to February.
Travel tip: Rent a cycle or scooter to explore the ruins comfortably.
For days when I canât afford to spend an entire weekend away, Nandi Hills is my go-to escape. Just 60 km from Bangalore, itâs perfect for a half-day trip.
If youâve ever watched the sunrise from Nandi Hills, youâll know why itâs so loved. Standing above the clouds while the sun slowly colors the horizonâit feels otherworldly. Early mornings are the best, though evenings with cool winds are equally soothing.
Best time to visit: Year-round, especially on weekdays to avoid crowds.
Budgeting: Just fuel for your car or bike, plus maybe some chai and hot pakoras at the top.
Over the years, Iâve picked up some small but useful hacks that make short trips smoother:
In terms of budget, most of these getaways can be done under â¹3,000ââ¹6,000 per person for 2â3 days, depending on your choice of stay and activities.
Every time I step out of Bangalore for a quick getaway, I come back with something newâbe it a peaceful sunrise in the hills, the thrill of spotting wildlife, or the simple joy of exploring a new café in a small town. The best part? You donât need weeks of planning or a huge budget. Sometimes, all it takes is the decision to get up, pack a bag, and just drive.
So the next time the city feels too loud, donât overthink. Pick a spot, hit the road, and let Karnataka surprise you. After all, the best stories often begin just a few hours away from home.
