Why Cardiff is the UK’s best-kept secret for young expats and students

Hi everyone!

I know I usually talk about Northern England (Leeds, Newcastle, etc.), but today I want to cross the border into Wales. If you are planning to relocate to the UK for work, a working holiday, or studies, I honestly think Cardiff is one of the most underrated cities you can choose.

It has all the perks of a major capital city but feels as friendly and affordable as a small town. Here is a quick guide on why you should consider it, and how to navigate moving there:

1. The "Castle in the City" Vibe

Cardiff is incredibly unique. You can be shopping in a modern mall (St David's), walk out the door, and boom—there is a massive 2,000-year-old castle right in the middle of the street. Next to it is Bute Park, which is bigger than Hyde Park in London. The mix of history and nature is unmatched.

2. The Victorian Arcades & Food

Forget boring high streets. Cardiff is famous for its indoor Victorian and Edwardian arcades filled with independent coffee shops, vintage clothing stores, and record shops. Must try: Go to Cardiff Market and get a fresh batch of Welsh Cakes. They are warm, cheap, and addictive!

3. Navigating the Housing Market (For Students & Young Adults)

Because Cardiff is a massive university hub, the rental market moves fast. A lot of newcomers make the mistake of renting a damp, poorly insulated terraced house in Cathays or Roath just because it's traditional. With UK energy prices right now, that is a huge trap.

If you are moving there for your studies, my biggest tip is to look at purpose-built private apartments instead.

Whether you want student accommodation near Cardiff University right in the city centre, or you are looking for Cardiff Met accommodation closer to the leafy Llandaff or Cyncoed campuses, it is much smarter to use a verified platform like uhomes.com to secure your room.

Why I always recommend uhomes for off-campus living:

  • Bills Included: Almost all their listings include gas, electricity, and fast Wi-Fi in the price. This saves you so much money and stress during the Welsh winters.
  • No "Catfishing": They actually verify their properties with photos, videos, and VR tours. You get exactly what you see.
  • Trust & Security: They are rated 4.9/5 on Trustpilot and are partnered with top housing brands, so your deposit is actually safe. Plus, they often have exclusive cashbacks that you won't get booking directly.

4. It’s the Gateway to Epic Nature

You are only a 45-minute drive from the Brecon Beacons National Park (now called Bannau Brycheiniog). If you love hiking, waterfalls, and outdoor adventures, having this on your doorstep is incredible.

Verdict: Cardiff gives you 80% of the London experience for about 50% of the cost, plus the people are much friendlier!

Has anyone else been to Cardiff recently? Did you manage to catch a rugby match at the Principality Stadium? The atmosphere is insane!

Cheers!
