Honestly, what can you expect out of a weekend in Bangalore anyway? You're planning to go out with friends, spend two hours stuck at a signal, and end up at a noisy pub where you can't even hear each other speak.
If you’re past the city noise, you really should consider a wine tour in Bangalore. It’s probably the easiest way to feel like you’ve really left the city without having to drive out for 8 hours on the road.
Just imagine changing the horns for some actual silence and green fields. You get to walk around the vineyard and see where the grapes grow, and finally, learn how the wine in your fridge was really made. It’s super chill, and honestly, the air out there feels different.
One doesn't have to be a maestro to appreciate this.
The Walk: You just wander through rows of grapes. It's great for photos, but it's also just nice to walk on actual grass for a change.
The Sciencey Bit: They show you these massive tanks where the wine sits. It's actually pretty cool to be shown the process, and it's relatively quick.
The Tasting: This is the fun part. You sit down and sample a couple of varieties. They'll teach you how to smell and sip correctly. Even if you just normally "gulp" your wine, you will learn a thing or two here.
Where to?
There are a few solid spots around the city. Grover Zampa is a classic choice if you want something established. Big Banyan is really pretty and great if you want a long, lazy lunch. Then there’s Heritage, which is just perfect for a casual day trip with a group of friends.
Booking: Do not just turn up. These places are usually packed on Saturdays and Sundays, so it’s best to give them a call a few days prior.
Shoes: Wear sneakers. Walking on a field while wearing flip-flops and heels is not advisable.
Timing: Try to get there by 10:30 or 11:00 AM. That way, you will finish the tour just in time for a good lunch.
Is it expensive?
Not really. The average costs vary from around ₹1,000 to ₹1,500. It’s roughly the same as what you’ll spend having a drink or two and an appetizer in one of the pubs on MG Road anyway.
Can I bring my family?
For sure. The kids don’t drink, obviously, but tend to enjoy the space and the tour. It’s a nice family experience. What is the best time to visit? Winter (Nov to Feb) is great since the weather is perfect. However, for a view of the grapes before picking, visit from Jan to March.
The Verdict
If you are looking for a break that does not involve a loud DJ or a parking struggle, then a wine tour in Bangalore is your thing. It's slow, it's fun, and you actually come back home feeling relaxed instead of tired.
