Kolhapur- A city of Maratha Royals

Maharastra lies in the western part of India and is associated with the coastal beauty of the Arabian Sea. In this second-most populous state of India lies a city by the name Kolhapur.

Kolhapur city is situated on the banks of the Panchganaga River and is surrounded by Sahyadri ranges. It is known for its historical forts, temples and royal palaces of olden royal families.

Kolhapur is about 387 km from Mumbai, the financial capital of the country.
The place is famous for the Indian handi-crafted leather slippers, the Kolhapuri Chappal and Kolhapuri Saaj is a famous local jewellery

This marvellous structure was built in 1884. It is an excellent example of Indian Architecture and houses fine possessions of Charapatis of Kolhapur. It is one of the most recommended places to visit as it gives you a glimpse of magnificent Maratha rulers.

Have fun at Kalamba Lake

Seek Blessings from Shri Mahalaxmi Temple-

This temple tops the list of attractions in the city. It is also called Amabai Temple and is dedicated to Goddess Laxmi. The deity in this temple is established in the west direction, unlike other Hindu temples where the deities either face north or east direction.

It is also famous for Kirnotsav or the festival of Sun Rays where the sun rays fall directly on the idol in January, February and November.

Witness the Bhavani Mandap

Located on the west of the Mahalakshmi Temple, Bhavani Mandap is a historical building and one of the important places to visit in Kolhapur. It houses the massive statue of Kolhapur’s beloved prince Shahu Maharaj. Apart from stuffed animals hunted by him, the wooden throne is believed to have been used by Shivaji Maharaj. The Mandap is considered to be an important attraction of Kolhapur.

Shopping

A visit to this city is incomplete without shopping. Being an olden heritage city there are lots of things that you can shop here. Kolhapur has a lot of unique items and you must try and buy a few of them.
